Weekend Watchlist: Barbarian, Pinocchio and Speak No Evil
[Izon by Trent Walton fades in, plays alone, fades out]
MIA Hi, welcome to Weekend Watchlist, a look at what’s screening and streaming brought to you by The Letterboxd Show. I’m Mia, they’re Slim…
SLIM Hello!
MIA And together we’ll dig through what’s dropping this weekend, last weekend, recent trends on Letterboxd and we’ll also take a peek at our own watchlists—all under 30 minutes or your money back!
SLIM Mia, I won’t lie to you. I won’t ever lie to you, Mia, but this could be the biggest episode we’ve ever done. By the time this episode posts CM Punk may be gone from all elite wrestling but more important than all that, horror movie Barbarian hits theaters, Pinocchio with Tom Hanks hits Disney+, and Speak No Evil hits limited theaters before dropping on Shudder next week. And it sounds like we have competing horror movies battling for most disturbing movie of the week.
MIA Yes we do. My money personally is on Barbarian, I did see it and it was so scary that I had to flee LA! I had to get out of town and go home to my parents and hide in Portland, where I am recording this week. So shout out PDX. Go Ducks!
SLIM I saw some paparazzi photos of you wearing sunglasses, getting on a Greyhound bus out of town after that movie screening.
MIA Yeah, ugh, you caught me doing that? [Slim laughs] Oh my god. I even took the Greyhound so that people wouldn’t hound me—hound. Ha ha ha!
SLIM I think it was like the dollar fare. It was like those deals, you know, dollar fare, 30-hour trip, that was the bus you got on. [Mia laughs] Later, also our ASMR king Brian Formo is back from Venice. One final check-in, Letterboxd editorial producer. We’ll also read your amazing community reviews as always, thanks for tagging your reviews ‘Weekend Watchlist’ and of course, we’ll check out our own watchlists later in the show.
MIA Okay, let’s get into barbarian the movie that traumatized me so bad I had to skip town. Barbarian is directed by Zach Cregger of Whitest Kids You Know, it is on 20,000 watchlists and here—
SLIM Wow.
MIA Yeah, yeah, no, word is spreading. It’s got the hype. Here’s the synopsis: “In town for a job interview, a young woman arrives at her Airbnb late at night only to find—” Okay. Actually, I’m going to ignore the synopsis because it kind of makes it—
SLIM Wow.
MIA Yeah, I’m sorry. But it makes it sound like it’s kind of a trendy Airbnb horror type thing, but it’s not like that at all. And I think it’s really good to go in blind to this one. Like there are billboards all over LA that just say, “The scariest movie in years.”
SLIM Oh my god.
MIA And I’m inclined to agree. And I think that that’s enough, like you don’t need to know about it and just know that I agree that it’s the scariest movie in years. I haven’t yelped and screamed and covered my eyes that much since Hereditary.
SLIM Oh...
MIA Yeah, it was really getting me, but that was, again, that was like trauma-scary, where it’s like in your bones.
SLIM Grief-scary.
MIA Yes, it’s like grief and eugh... but this was like fun-scary, where you’re with your friends and kind of jumping like, “Eee! Ahh!” [Slim laughs] It’s like lighthearted yelping. Yeah, I loved it. One of my favorites of the year. Oh, I also want to share that at the Q&A, Zach Cregger was saying that he was inspired by the movie Audition, which I love. And also Psycho, of course, and Drag Me To Hell and Sam Raimi in general. [Slim gasps] Yeah, you can really tell that he’s inspired by Sam Raimi with like, there’s really fun dynamic camera movements and it’s kind of campy fun. So if you like Sam Raimi, check this one out.
SLIM I love Drag Me To Hell. I feel like that’s one of his most underrated, if not the most underrated Sam Raimi movies.
MIA I love that one. It’s one of my favorites. So, yeah.
SLIM That freaking goat.
MIA I know, the goat. [Slim & Mia laugh]
SLIM I’m so annoyed that I have not seen this movie yet. I cannot wait to see it. The buzz is fever pitch. I tried to ignore everything after I saw some tweets that were getting me excited. So I’m pumped. Brenna left a review: “Georgina Campbell: our new Scream Queen. This movie is something ELSE. Bonus points for a great gag featuring something that has always scared me: an auto-retracting tape measurer.”
MIA Yes, I also want—yeah, this movie is funny too. Because against directed by Zack Cregger of Whitest Kids You Know, that sketch group. It’s interesting to see how his comedy informs the horror of the film and vice versa. I think that comedy and horror actually go very, very well together, and this demonstrates that. We have a review from Hanny that says:“ I was entirely way too high to handle this movie.” And all I’ll say is I did have a similar experience to Hanny... [Mia & Slim laugh]
SLIM It’s on my watchlist, I’ll say that. I’m so excited to see it. Not in the same vein whatsoever... Pinocchio. [Slim & Mia laugh] By Robert Zemeckis, it’s on 7.5 watchlists. That’s coming to Disney+ this weekend. So this is the Zemeckis version of Pinocchio. I know Del Toro fans are fever pitch for that as well for that version, but this is a different one. Let me just read the synopsis for Pinocchio just in case anyone’s curious what this movie is about: “A wooden puppet embarks on a thrilling adventure to become a real boy.”
MIA Ohhh... That’s what it’s about... Thank you, Slim.
SLIM Yes, yes, that’s this one. [Slim laughs] You’re welcome. Just in case, you know?
MIA Thank you.
SLIM I wouldn’t want to gatekeep a wooden boy from anyone. I want to make an open environment. What’s your vibe on Pinocchio, these movies?
MIA I was really holding out for the Guillermo Del Toro one and I thought that that was coming out this week and I was all excited. [Mia laughs] Sorry, sorry, Zemeckis. But that one has Ewan McGregor as the sexy cricket—sorry, as the cricket... [Mia & Slim laugh]
SLIM #SexyCricket.
MIA I’m sorry about that. But if you’re gonna cast Ewan McGregor, he’s gonna have some sex appeal. So yeah, I thought this was this and was all excited, but I’m happy for the kids. You know? I’m sure they like Pinocchio and to have two Pinocchios in the same year must be thrilling.
SLIM It’s got to be a big year for kids.
MIA Yeah, huge year for kids!
SLIM Families, really, I mean families, you’re looking for somebody, you got some Pizza Hut coming, hot. You got some breadsticks, you’re like, ‘Let’s fire up Pinocchio from Zemeckis.’
MIA From Zemeckis from Welcome to Marwen. Yeah, I have not really trusted him since Welcome to Marwen, to be honest, but let’s see what he does.
SLIM Zemeckis loves that CGI. And the Zemeckis CGI is not entirely my bag, but it does seem like a mixture this time around, like Tom Hanks is in it. I don’t think he’s computer generated, I see a few other live-action characters, but also some background characters that are CGI. So maybe potentially a great family movie. No reviews for this just yet, it’s under embargo as of recording. So we’ll see what that means next week, we’ll get some averages and reviews and we’ll check back in next time.
MIA Okay, let’s get back to scary world.
SLIM I’m ready.
MIA Yeah, we have to go back. We have to leave cute-kid wooden-puppet world and go to Speak No Evil, directed by Christian Tahfdrup, it is on 15,000 watch lists. It is coming to New York City and LA this weekend and on Shudder next weekend. “A Danish family visits a Dutch family they met on a holiday. What was supposed to be an idyllic weekend slowly starts unraveling as the Danes try to stay polite in the face of unpleasantness.” Slim, you saw this, word on the street...
SLIM Holy smokes, Mia. Holy smokes. This had more watchlists than Pinocchio, but I just had to space things out. I didn’t want to get people to just have some kind of like, you know, episode listening to the horror movies this week.
MIA Our scariest episode yet...
SLIM This is probably the most traumatizing movie I’ve seen in recent times. I love Hereditary—
MIA Oh, we’re talking Hereditary again!
SLIM A second Hereditary mention this week, but this is different than Hereditary. So you mentioned another movie that I would compare it to, which is Funny Games. And you love Funny Games, right?
MIA I do. I do. But partially, I mean I love Michael Haneke and I love Tim Roth and Naomi Watts. Sorry, I am talking about the English version because of Tim Roth and Naomi Watts. But I do, I do really like it, especially Michael Pitt’s menacing performance.
SLIM My god. So those kind of movies quote, “aren’t for me,” trademark symbol, so certain aspects of this movie are not for me, but I think this is really going to like—I mean this is hitting Shudder next week after a limited release this weekend, people were about to get effed up watching this movie. Like, “Hey babe, want to watch Speak No Evil this weekend? About some Danish family, some Dutch family,” and then their lives will be changed, I think, by the end of the movie, Justin LaLiberty’s review: “Can’t wait for people to just casually stumble across this on Shudder and have the feel bad time of their lives.” [Slim laughs]
MIA Whoa!
SLIM Most people I am friends with on letterbox have really beaming reviews for this, so I think this is really going to connect with a certain segment of horror fans and maybe like, you know, people who just want to just have sweat, hot sweats dripping down their face while they’re watching it, that’s what I think.
MIA Maybe it’s easier for them because they don’t have children, perhaps, I hear this is a—
SLIM You said it, not me.
MIA Kid gore! There needs to be warnings for the kid gore!
SLIM You know, we talked about the cat list.
MIA The cat list! [Mia laughs]
SLIM The ‘Do cats get harmed?’ list. There needs to be, I think, a kid gore list. I’m not—
MIA Yeah!
SLIM Even just saying that, I don’t want that in my Google—
MIA Kid gore is not a pleasant—[Mia laughs]
SLIM Incognito mode, 100%, kid gore. [Slim & Mia laugh] This episode might even get pulled from Apple just even from me saying it out loud. But with that said, I will read one more from Erlich: “It’s been a little more than two years since becoming a parent quickly, completely, and irrevocably rewired how my brain perceives movies (in addition to just about everything else). This might be the first new release I’ve seen since then that features a moment I couldn’t bear to watch because of that. You’ll know it when you see it. But also the movie is really funny at times, in a hardcore discomfort porn sort of way! Anyway, this is an endorsement.” So positive reviews all around for Speak No Evil.
MIA Should we travel? Should we get out of town?
SLIM I’m always ready for travel.
MIA What if we went to Venice, Slim? What if we went there, checked in with our colleague, Brian?
SLIM Brian Formo, the ASMR king. We got so many rave reviews from folks hearing Brian’s voice for the first time on this pod. We thought let’s get a little bit of a wrap up from Venice Film Festival, you know, Brian finally saw some films, so maybe we’ll see, get some picks from Brian right now.
BRIAN I will be leaving Venice today by boat, by plane, by automobile from one film fest to another: TIFF. But not before giving all dear listeners a little rundown of my Biennale faves. Tár was best of Venice for me. Todd Field’s first film in sixteen years, stars Cate Blanchett as the first woman conductor of a major German orchestra. But what it’s really about, is how she conducts herself publicly versus privately. Tár is Blanchett’s Raging Bull. That’s what I’ll say. The rise and fall of a powerful persona. In a rating of Chris Pine screen captures from the Don’t Worry Darling press conference, Tár gets pine looking to the heavens with his eyes rolled back. [Slim laughs]
SLIM You hear this buzz from Todd Field’s first movie and what did he say? Sixteen years?
MIA Sixteen years! Yeah.
SLIM Cate Blanchett’s Raging Bull.
MIA That really sold me, I’m a big fan of Cate, and I will watch her act for two hours and 38 minutes. I will do this, gladly and happily. I’m super excited for this one. Todd Field—oh! My buddy from Portland, he’s also a Portlander.
SLIM Portland boy, Todd Field.
MIA Respect, respect. Yeah, this is one of my most anticipated after the rave reviews coming out of Venice, not just Brian liked it, everybody seems to really like this one.
SLIM Wowow. How about the Don’t Worry Darling social media eruption this past 24 hours?
MIA Oh, yeah. I mean, everyone’s been saying this, but I am worried, Darling. [Slim laughs] I know that that is the joke everyone’s saying. But it really is succinct and to the point.
SLIM Can you imagine if HBO pulled—I don’t even know if HBO owns the rights to this movie. I’m just making it up. HBO, Discovery pulls an Audible, just puts it on HBO Max. And just keeps it going...
MIA If they dropped it now, this would be the most watched movie in the world if they dropped it right now on HBO.
SLIM In history, in history.
MIA Yeah, in history.
SLIM All right. So Brian left one more voice memo from his gondola as he’s heading to the airport and some other suggestions for us to add to our watchlists. So let’s hear some Brendan Fraser talking here as well mixed in.
BRIAN I am also pleased to report that despite disliking both of their previous films, Three Billboards [Outside Ebbing, Missouri]’s Martin McDonagh and The Card Counter’s Paul Schrader are back with a vengeance in their new features, The Banshees of Inisherin for McDonagh and Master Gardener for Schrader, in a rating of Chris Pine screencaptures from the Don’t Worry Darling red carpet Inisherin and Gardener get Pine’s disposable camera shot of a flaunting Florence Pugh. They dance. Despite being nearly trampled by Timothée Chalamet fans and spotting a woman with ‘Harry’ written on her face for Harry Styles, the final thing I would like to report is the immense love for Brendan Fraser, a man worthy of a comeback and all the laurels in the world. Fraser was here to Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale. There will be tears in your eyes for Brendan, though most seem to have enjoyed the movie more than I, I welcome Brenaissance with open arms. And now I return to the mainland... Farewell.
SLIM Brenaissance. That’s a great word I’m going to use on this pod.
MIA Banshees! Banshees! Banshees! I’m so excited for [The] Banshees [of Inisherin]. I’m glad to see that Martin McDonagh is back in Ireland where he seems to know more about the politics and history of Ireland as opposed to America. But I love Colin Farrell, obviously, and I’m so excited to see him and Brendan Gleason and Martin team up once again, because I also love In Bruges.
SLIM We’ll have a link to Brian’s Letterboxd too as well, if folks want to follow Brian’s early reviews and ratings. We should look back at last week. We had some big releases. We want to see what we watched, maybe what you snuck in. But one thing I do want to call out real quick is we just released a little mini feature add-on for Pro and Patrons. So I have my own list on Letterboxd for my own movies that I have in physical, DVD, Blu-ray, and you can tag that list with ‘own’ or ‘owned’. And now when you go to a movie page, like Mission: Impossible – Fallout, if you have that movie and one of those lists, it’ll say “you own this film”. So now if you’re like Mitchell, who has a thousand Blu-rays that they haven’t touched, you can be like, “Oh, yeah, I have that on Blu-ray. I’ll just watch it there.” So pretty cool little feature for Pro and Patrons for folks that want to check that out.
MIA I love my physical media list. I have one of those as well. I have 248 on there. How many do you have?
SLIM Holy smokes. I think that’s more than me. I have a lot of VHS though.
MIA Ohhh! Well that counts, that’s physical media.
SLIM Yeah, that covers a lot of my physical media.
MIA So... As you may recall, last week, I watched like five movies off my watchlist. I went hard, so I needed a little bit of a break. I only watched one movie last week. Minions... [Slim gasps] Yeah. Yeah. I watched Minions, not [Minions:] The Rise of Gru, it was the first Minions. And it was funny, Slim! I was laughing! It is easily the best of the Despicable Me cinematic universe. [Slim laughs]
SLIM I don’t know if you can confirm or deny this, but I saw someone getting a tattoo at this event. Is that true? Did I see that in someone’s IG story? These Minions parties are going off! My god!
MIA I watched it with my dear friend and Letterboxd Demi Adejuyigbe. He invited a bunch of us over to watch Minions and we get there and he’s just getting a tattoo at his kitchen table. [Slim laughs] And he’s like, “Come on in guys!” And then we sit and watch Minions while he’s just getting a tattoo. It was so funny. So, I mean, part of why I liked it so much was because I was watching it with my friends and we were being goofy and having fun. But it is like a genuinely sweet movie. I don’t know why it has a 2.6 when [Minions: The] Rise of Gru, [Minions: The] Rise of Gru is a 3.5, I want to say.
SLIM Holy cow.
MIA Yeah, and I’ve heard by many s that the first one is better, so I don’t know what’s going on there. I think it is, there’s a lot of five-star ironic reviews for Minions: The Rise of Gru that’s bumping that up, if you look at the little graph, but I have to recommend Minions. I know that’s out of character for me probably, but it’s funny! [Slim laughs]
SLIM From Funny Games to Minions. When I have movie watching parties, I pretty much, I think I like air fry some hotdogs. Meanwhile, your friends are having tattoos.
MIA We’re getting tattoos...
SLIM I need to step it up.
MIA Oh yeah, we brought bananas.
SLIM Bananas.
MIA Ba-na-na! Ba-na-na they say. Bee-do bee-do! [Slim laughs]
SLIM All right, so let’s look back at the releases last week. Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul, 3.2 average, that’s on Peacock. Brian Ly left review for Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul: “Though he has been plenty acknowledged, perhaps prematurely so, as a new master of horror,” TM, that’s my TM added. “Jordan Peele really should be known for this renaissance he is bringing about in Black cinema with Monkeypaw productions and establishing a vehicle for up and coming creators like the Ebo twins to work on truly unique and interesting projects such as this film.” I agree with that. Jaws in IMAX, a lot of people went to go see Jaws in IMAX last weekend. DiddyRose left a review: “That we don’t see the whole shark until the end is a testament to filmmaking that preys on our imagination. And the two-note music that signals the shark is beyond classic. Didn’t do a lot of good for how we see sharks, but damn, what a movie. Side note: is it just me or does Scheider look a bit like a shark himself?”
MIA Yes—no, sorry. Yes in that it’s not just you. [Slim laughs] Yes as in he looks like a shark.
SLIM I can’t tell if it’s like looking like an actual shark or ‘a shark’ is like a metaphor for a sexy man. Like, ‘He’s a shark.’
MIA Oh, well... both. Why not both?
SLIM Bite me up, Roy.
MIA Yeah, bite me up, Roy. [Slim & Mia laugh] Okay...
SLIM Real quick before we look back at the trends, Saloum is hitting Shudder this weekend. It was limited release last weekend, I gave it rave reviews. So check that out on Shudder if you have a subscription.
MIA And now it’s time to check in on the Letterboxd top 50 of 2022 list to see what is at the top of the list for things released this year. We got some Jack’s Facts. So The Whale and Tár just hit 1,000 views, so now they are officially eligible. [The] Whale enters at number thirteen, it’s going to TIFF, will be released in the US on December 9 from A24. Tár is coming in at 31, it’s also going to New York Film Festival and will be released in the US on October 7 from Focus Features. Woo, Tár!
SLIM Sheesh. Already hitting the list, the Top 50. So let’s look back at our watchlist picks from last week. And just a reminder, if you want to have a chance to have your review featured on the show, tag it ‘Weekend Watchlist’, thanks everyone, there’s like six pages of reviews I had to sort through before recording. So many great reviews with that tag. Last week, I shuffled my watchlist, you know, every week we shuffle, I got Two Evil Eyes from Romero and Argento, this is a horror movie. Adrienne Barbeau. It’s two stories, so it’s like Edgar Allan Poe homage. So there’s one story and then there’s a backend story with Harvey Keitel. The first story was kind of cool, it’s about her and her dying husband but she’s having an affair with his doctor at the time. So they’re trying to like swindle money out of this old dying husband of hers. And the doctor is hypnotizing him while he’s like, on his deathbed to make phone calls to the bank, like, “Yes, I approve all my money going to her.” And something goes very wrong. And he somehow speaks to them from beyond the grave via hypnosis. Very cool premise. The second storyline had Harvey Keitel and it kind of put me to sleep a little bit. So... [Slim & Mia laugh]
MIA Harvey!
SLIM Which is a crazy thing to say for Harvey acting his little heart out, didn’t work for me. That was Argento’s story. So I gave this two stars, I didn’t love it. But the first story was pretty cool.
MIA I watched... ahem... Marya E. Gates recommended it in a Twitter thread about underseen movies directed by women—shoutout Maryah, she’s amazing. And this had me ready to enter my Joan Micklin Silver phase. She directed this film, I’ve been meaning to get into her work for a while. This was super impressive. So it’s this drama about Jewish immigrants who come to the Lower East Side of New York City in 1896. And they live on Hester Street in Manhattan. And Carol Kane, she’s the lead, so her traditionalist character is really having a hard time assimilating into American culture, while her husband is like completely America-pilled. He loves it. [Slim laughs] He has no problem assimilating, he is all in on it. And she’s having trouble because she’s a traditionalist Jewish woman. And it’s kind of about her alienation and struggling to to assimilate. And I really, really enjoyed it. It also really feels like it was made a long time ago. Like if you told me this was made in the ’30s, I would believe you, when it was actually made in 1975 for like, only $400,000. It was a success. I really enjoyed it. It’s streaming on Kanopy. And I highly recommend.
SLIM I actually just had to re-up my library card. So I was using Kanopy and what’s the other one?
MIA Hoopla!
SLIM Hoopla! Yes, Hoopla. So I was both of those. I mean, for folks that have a local library, get that library card and to Kanopy and Hoopla, there’s tons of movies on there.
MIA Yeah, and they have great stuff.
SLIM Yeah, fantastic stuff. I actually used it for prep for two recent Letterboxd Show episodes for movies that were chosen, so I’m talking free, people!
MIA It’s free! And you get twenty movies a month. This isn’t even an ad.
SLIM It’s crazy.
MIA Yeah, I love Kanopy. I am on there.
SLIM It’s not an ad, but Kanopy or Hoopla, if you’re listening right now, we’re open to opportunities. [Slim & Mia laugh] All right, so we have some reviews from our community that I do want to spotlight, specifically First Reformed, which I loved. Liam left a review: “Way more depressing than I would’ve ever thought it would be. Ethan Hawke gives probably his best performance and is helped with some amazing direction and writing from Paul Schrader.” Who we mentioned earlier. “Would make an absolutely amazing double feature with Taxi Driver. I need to watch this again ASAP. Also the cinematography here is some of the best ever.” Great review.
MIA Yes! Oh, and we got another Marcel the Shell [with Shoes On] review because that’s kind of... we have to spotlight a Marcel review every week or else we get in trouble. So this is from Bola: “A very touching story about grief, the courage/encouragement one often needs to get the most out of life, and the people who help provide it.”
SLIM Marcel. Marcel [the Shell with Shoes On] just hit VOD this week. So if you want to rent it, now’s the time to watch it at home with the fam.
MIA Yes, my friends and I almost watched it last night and I was like, “This is kind of a crying movie. I don’t know if we’re ready for that.” [Mia laughs]
SLIM I think my favorite scene of that entire movie is when Marcel is going through the the YouTube comments.
MIA Yeah!
SLIM Cassi left a review that I want to spotlight: “Emily makes all the wrong decisions and I’m here to watch the shit hit the fan. This thrilling modern American drama never had a dull moment and fulfilled fantasies of escaping the daily grind.” Agree.
MIA Agree.
SLIM All right. Now we got to shuffle again, Mia.
MIA Oh, right, right.
SLIM You got to shuffle again.
MIA Let me get over here...
SLIM I’m going to my watchlist. I currently have 300 films in there. I’m going up. I’m making the wrong wrong direction here. I’m going to filter by Stream-only. So I only want to watch movies that I can fire up immediately. And then I’m going to sort by Shuffle. And I have to watch the first movie that I get... [shuffle sound plays] 1991, Cast a Deadly Spell. “In a fantastical 1940s where magic is used by everyone, a hard boiled detective investigates the theft of a mystical tome.” Julianne Moore is in this.
MIA Oh... she... she! [Slim & Mia laugh]
SLIM I think this was an HBO TV movie from the ’90s. I adding this to my watchlist. It’s got Fred Ward, David Warner and Julianne Moore and Clancy Brown.
MIA Whoa!
SLIM Yeah, directed by Martin Campbell of Casino Royale and GoldenEye fame, believe it or not. So that’s my movie this week. [shuffle sound plays] [Slim laughs] Mia just did a triple-take.
MIA Because I get to continue my Joan Micklin Silver adventure!
SLIM What!
MIA Yeah! I got Between the Lines!
SLIM My god. What?!
MIA What?!
SLIM This is unreal. This is nonsense.
MIA Another one? This can’t be right. But that’s what happened.
SLIM Another banger poster too.
MIA And it’s on, and it’s on my beloved Kanopy. [Slim laughs] Woooow.
SLIM Did Kanopy sponsor you this episode? Is that what’s happening behind the scenes? [Mia laughs]
MIA What! This is so exciting! Yay! And it’s about the newspaper. I love the newspaper.
SLIM Oh my god.
MIA Wow! Yay! Okay, thrilling.
SLIM Fun, adventure, romance on $75 a week.
MIA Yuuup.
SLIM 1977. Look at the font on that poster.
MIA Oh, such a fun font. Oh, 1977, the best year for movies. I’ll say it. This is gonna go hard. Yay!
