The Dark Crystal

1982

★★★ Watched

All the moviemakers' energy went into the technical wizardry. There's not much to the story and the exposition in the first few minutes is death. The visuals are still fascinating over 40 years later - I don't think it's ever been matched. Pretty gruesome for a kids' movie but my little ones seem to be unfazed for now.

The Parent Trap

1998

★★ Watched

Has some nice moments, but i found it hard to enjoy _The Parent Trap_ . The plot is overly-complicated and contrived in order to make the core gimmick work. The dialog made me roll my eyes too often. And the fencing scene is totally against regulations! The referee should be fired!

Dinner in America

Two young people entranced by punk and hard-core attitude and outlook on life. They are not heroes and they make a lot of bad decisions. Should they believe in theirselves? I'm reminded of Napoleon Dynamite, but more crass.

Squaring the Circle (The Story of Hipgnosis)

2022

★★★ Watched

Interesting, if one-note look at how one specific firm made album covers. The director effectively portrayed the genre-defining successes and wild tangents possible when creativity runs free among a small crew of complementary minds. Over the whole film the viewer it bashed over the head: Storm was a jerk and a genius. I'm a fan of some Pink Floyd but there are a few artists repeatedly discussed that are invisible (to americans at least). 60cc?
