When people talk about The Hunger Games, its battle royale-style death match is what’s primarily referenced. But the world built around it is why I love the series (so far).
It’s an ageless social commentary, and its underlying themes of tyranny and freedom are ever prevalent; the lavish and colourful Capitol is a feast for the eyes but poison for the heart; without being expository, its characters are wonderfully layered, aided by the phenomenal performances.
This is where I left off years ago — wish me luck with Mockingjay parts 1 and 2!
