The Curse

2023

★★★

Feels like some white people decided to make a show about the heartless cruelty of the white savior complex, gentrification, and capitalism, but then they were like, “Ooh but what if we also didn’t do that?”

You cannot possibly guess what happens in the last episode of this show, and that is the only purpose for the last episode of this show existing.

The Curse does a decent job of showing how greedy, rich, right-wing capitalists will attempt to cosplay as leftists in order to ease their guilt. It captures how they use the plight of Native Americans as a way to center themselves. However, it also sometimes feels like The Curse itself is doing the exact same thing.

I think there are some undeniably great moments where it pushes reality to its limit and makes you squirm with visceral discomfort, but the meaningful themes get lost the further into this we go.

I would never compare this to twin peaks. I think David Lynch can see far beyond this.
