This moved me in ways I never expected. Not only is it full of beautiful scenery and soundtracked by one of my favorite genres of music, but the emotional core here is of course what really shines. The things Tim Key does with his face and eyes to convey deep sadness and longing are genuinely heartbreaking. It takes a real talent behind and in front of the camera to make characters feel so real that you cry for them like…

A beautiful portrait of humanity and love. It’s not always easy moving through time and change and growing away from your childhood memories, but this movie treats its characters with such empathy and sincerity that you feel the weight of the events as if they’ve happened to you too. Greta Lee and Teo Yoo have such wonderful chemistry, you can feel that shared history and the pain of words unspoken. It also has a super cozy slice of life feel,…

While this is a story about something completely horrendous that happened to a community, it’s also a story about the impact of one person on hundreds. You can feel the love through the screen, and you almost feel like you yourself lost Andrew Bagby. The complete failure of the government and the cruelty of one woman is juxtaposed by so much light and warmth and kindness on the other side. It’s an absolute emotional rollercoaster and one of the most heartbreaking stories I’ve ever heard. I can only hope these people have found some semblance of peace.

You know what, hell yeah! What a lovely conclusion to this trilogy. The visuals, cinematography, and action sequences all leveled up majorly, which is crazy because they were always good to begin with! Space just looks extra stunning here and the fight choreography is super dynamic and fun. I’ll always be the first to it when a movie makes me cry, and as someone who wasn’t necessarily going out of my way to watch these, I consider it an even greater feat that this one did. The whole arc of this trilogy is wonderfully written, and I was swept up in it from beginning to end.

It might just be your general run-of-the-mill biopic, but dammit if I don’t love a movie about a badass, trailblazing woman. Things seem more bleak every day, but knowing we’ve had and currently have women like this fighting for everyone gives me a little hope. This gives a really solid and concise look at the cases that led RBG into her career as a gender rights lawyer and eventually a Supreme Court justice. And as someone who didn’t really know the specifics, I appreciated this palatable look at the complex world of law. It made me cry and I am not ashamed.

Now this is what I call a movie deserving of the title best picture. Masterfully directed and shot with some of the most innovative filmmaking I’ve seen in awhile. It’s creative, important, and original and encapsulates everything that film can be. A beautiful story of friendship that’s never overshadowed by exploitation even when horrific things are happening. An absolute must watch, and the final best picture nominee I needed to watch ahead of the Oscar’s tonight. I know in my heart this won’t win, but man would that be incredible.

A Real Pain

A movie that beautifully captures the importance of being in touch with your emotions and allowing yourself to be vulnerable. We see this idea explored through the polarity of Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin’s characterization, with both actors wearing their hearts on their sleeves and taking us to some devastating places on either end of that spectrum. It’s a really sweet watch and a really necessary portrayal of men’s mental health and platonic love. You can tell there was a lot of heart and ion behind this one, and I can’t recommend it enough.

A devastating portrait of a family being ripped apart by corruption. Filmed beautifully and carried by an incredibly subdued yet powerful performance by Fernanda Torres, this is the kind of film that is almost exhausting due to its heaviness. We go from watching this family loving life together without a care in the world to the military dictatorship turning their lives upside down, all while the mother, Eunice, is left to pick up the pieces and remain strong as if she hasn’t just lost her husband. Immensely important viewing that stunned me into silence by the end. I’m so glad I caught this in theaters.

Disregard my very recent review of The Wild Robot saying I’m sure it’ll win best animated feature, THIS should absolutely be the frontrunner. It’s a one of a kind viewing experience with some shots looking like real images due to how beautifully animated they were. We are thrust into this seemingly fairytale world and just left to follow the struggles these animals experience together after being forced to depend on each other for survival. I never thought a movie with absolutely no dialogue could fly by so fast and make me so emotional. What an impressive fucking movie.

week 6: cults, brainwashing, maybe some kool-aid

A picture almost devoid of color, reflecting the lives of these women after their whole worlds were turned upside down. Yet somehow they manage to keep hope, strength, and make the most difficult decisions anyone could ever be faced with whilst maintaining their dignity and fierce of one another. This viewing experience is pure feminine rage.

If seeing this country’s history of violent racism and police brutality play out in real time hasn’t radicalized you yet, i really don’t know what will. In this tragic of a real story, we follow Oscar Grant in what we know are the last hours of his life, and we see him reconcile with his mistakes and start recognizing the changes he needs to make in different areas. It falsely fills you with hope, feeling almost like a slice…

“We’re here to become human again.”

I’ve never seen a movie set fully in prison that’s so full of hope and light. This is some truly beautiful storytelling. Everyone here gives such a vulnerable performance, and it really goes to show how much we need art and creative expression to survive, grow, and even rehabilitate ourselves. One of those movies that leaves you feeling changed at the end.
