Game of Thrones if Joffrey had been able to listen to Chappell Roan

I reading the novel this movie is based on as a sophomore in high school and being blown away that writing so hauntingly beautiful could exist. Despite my love of the filmic arts I spent a long time thinking there was no way they could possibly do Remarque’s words justice. The 2022 adaptation proved me wrong. This original adaptation proved me wrong once again. 
Lewis Milestone’s imagery is as stunning as Remarque’s prose both in its humanity and its brutality. This film is unequivocally one of the first true masterpieces of the sound era (almost undoubtedly Hollywood’s very first sound masterpiece) yet is still as mesmerizing and powerful today as it was almost 100 years ago. As anti-war as any piece of art could ever be.

Three things:

1. Screw the haters. Sure it’s campy and weird and far from perfect but it both raises some fascinating questions in a way Black Mirror hasn’t been able to since the first couple seasons, as well as exploring the interaction between technology, masculinity, male friendship, queerness, love, sex, and questions of reality in a startlingly cohesive and empathetic way.

My second Luhrmann film after Elvis (which I loved) and I’ve gotta say, while not every choice he makes works, the kinetic energy of his filmmaking is kind of awesome. This movie is certainly full of flaws, but it’s wholly unlike any Shakespeare adaptation to date and I think some props are due for that originality and the risks taken, even if they don’t always pay off.

Also there were multiple Radiohead songs so I’m automatically a big fan

The best part of this movie is the legitimately phenomenal first 15 minutes. The second best part is when it ends.

Between this and Evangelion I think I need a break from media where the main character probably wants to sleep with their mom

Shout out to Ryan Siemers for making me read Porphyria’s Lover in Brit Lit III so I could recreate the Leonardo DiCaprio pointing at the screen meme at the end of this movie

You know what, I’ll it it, I like this one. If it was an hour shorter I might even be willing to call it good

Temu Zone of Interest and Jojo Rabbit 

It is impossible to express just how beautifully shot this movie is and how high the arrow budget must have been

I don’t understand how both narratively and visually this movie manages to be so unengaging. Like you have some of the greatest source material possible, a stacked cast, and a director known for his visually engaging special effects work, why is your movie so uninteresting??? I guess they just flew a little too close to the sun or whatever

Truly shocked by how well this continues to hold up. The animation is exquisite, the visual gags are timeless, and the horror elements are surprisingly pervasive and effective. Still just a one of a kind movie that only gets better with age.

Not enough opportunities for Matthew Macfadyen to say “ludicrously capacious handbag” but otherwise pretty alright

This is the first iteration I’ve seen of the most remade film ever made so idk how it holds up against the other 24, but it’s fine I guess? It’s like if Pedro Almodovar directed an episode of Black Mirror but without the best parts of both those things. Just a solid three star watch

Disney: Everything is alive and it’s all happy and magical! Even the beast!

Cocteau: Everything is alive and it is all watching you. There is flesh everywhere and there will be eyes and faces in the places you least expect. You cannot hide from the gaze because everything is gazing. It’s all a waking nightmare wrapped up in a fairy tale package. Also there’s a beast

I’m not gonna try and pretend this is a good movie but I’ve been saying for a while that the problem with superhero movies is their refusal to embrace genre hybridity and while this one may be something of a misfire I really respect the fact that they chose to try and make a horror movie rather than just another forgettable X-Men installment

Movies these days are seriously lacking puzzles and contraptions

I mean yeah, it’s good, just not anything particularly special or memorable except for the very first and very last scenes

Has a lot of potential but you can only watch the main character walk away without a scratch from something that definitely should have killed him so many times before it starts to feel like the narrative has no stakes

I’ll be honest, I’m usually against the idea of showing anything approaching explicit sexuality on screen. I could give a long explanation for why but basically it usually boils down to how male gazey sex scenes usually are, the ethics of having actors perform explicit scenes, and the social and cultural implications of increased exposure to sexual intimacy from which the viewer is physically removed. While I can’t say this movie completely escaped all these issues and the other I have, it is remarkable to see how much it subverts the way the film industry, Hollywood in particular, depicts and deals with sexuality. In fact I think much of what I think the film is grappling with is the complexities around sex, desire, and intimacy — both physical and emotional — that even outside of the media we often overlook.
The film begins with sex as a deep form of connection, an intimate and binding promise of fidelity and love. Throughout the film we see the characters try to detach sexuality from this connection, make it something purely physical, though, without offering too many spoilers, we ultimately see how the connection between sex and connection, true intimacy, is somehow unavoidable, and through it all we can’t help but wonder where the real love is; what is driving it together, what is driving it apart?
But even on top of the sex there’s so much to this movie that really resonates with the real rhythm and flow of life, especially the point in life I’m at right now. So while I don’t know if I can fully recommend it, man, what a phenomenal film

Unfortunately I might have to add this to my four favorites for a time

Hot people fighting facism in space? Still holds up

The amount of self-hatred I feel giving this four stars is truly unmatched

In our search for truth all we find is knowledge  and the reality that all that truly matters to ultimately unknowable. We can only see with our own eyes yet all attempts to see take us anywhere but the mirror. No one gazed at the watery surface of Solaris where they would only see their own reflection, they gaze at their guests with a refusal to acknowledge that the guests are themselves. They are their own worst fear and greatest lives.  We are our own greatest love and worst fear. Until we accept that and evolve into it and beyond it that is all the cosmos will be: us, the things we love and the things we fear tangled together in a self-absorbed mess of so-called progress that leads nowhere but as far as we can drag our own heavy baggage.

Pretty sure this is what happened to JD Vance

I have seen this movie multiple times now and I still couldn’t tell you what the plot is

“Monkey loves you” and “monkey needs a hug” are the full range of my emotions tbh

I legitimately feel like the way I felt watching this must be the same feeling people had when they saw The Godfather or Star Wars for the first time. Nothing short of a generation-defining masterpiece

Everyone in this movie deserves better

wake up babe, new worst British accent of all time dropped (it’s 1931 and my family is starving because I’m spending what little money we have going to see some talking pictures)

Crazy how every song in this is a strong competitor for the worst song of all time

As someone who has lived in the Inland Empire I can confirm this is exactly what it’s like

I get that the message is using technology to spy on your kids = bad but also sis was doing coke at 15, maybe her mom’s response wasn’t the craziest thing in the world

Turns out the only ingredients for a perfect movie are Sean Connery, a bunch of car/boat/motorcycle/plane/tank chases, and a few Saw traps at the end

Yes it’s a fantastic love story and maybe one of the best post-colonial films ever made in the US, but I can’t stop thinking about how weird it is that Jay just takes some random dude’s kid from him at the end
