666th diary entry!

Quite the reflective film journey with this one.

While I’ve made a point of celebrating other personal numeric milestones, this is ittedly one I’d been anticipating for an unusually long time. I asked friends and fb for recommendations, planned for the ideal viewing experience, made a list of favorite contenders for the honor, and spent days settling on the winner.

The exhaustive process made me question why I had devoted so much time and energy to ~the…

Watched on Sat because my uncle was in town and wanted something with Nicole Kidman. I was way too tired and slept through most of the film, but had a proper viewing last night. (Ironically, I think it looks much better projected big than on a TV screen — but I always think that)

As usual, the criterion essay is insightful. Would recommend for situating the themes in the cultural context (e.g. televised trials of O.J. and source case Pamela Smart) and for its sharp read on the direction (especially as it reinforces Suzanne’s character and behavior).

Weirdly, also my first Gus Van Sant film :0

Checked around all the closets.
But nothing.

The owner reassured me she was probably just hiding, but I couldn’t find her under the bed.

Not in the closets, nor the cabinets.
Beneath the hamper, behind the washer.

There were no clumps in her litter.…

Been trying to show this to my food-loving parents for quite a while now. Not sure if they connected with the humor/commentary as much, but I’m proud of us for trying.

Also, pausing to get cold sake was probably the first time I’ve stopped a movie to retrieve the exact food depicted/discussed.  So thanks Dad for using your trademark interruptions to actually enrich our immersive experience.
