“You know how I’m always trying to save the planet? Now’s my chance.”

GOD I LOVE THIS MOVIE. I watching Independence Day for the first time in 6th grade, as part of a science-fiction elective that my science teacher ran. I immediately fell in love with it. When I went home that day, I told my mom how much I had liked it and she very bittersweetly told me that it was her sister’s (who had ed away 5…

For my 1000th movie on Letterboxd I wanted to watch something special to me. I wanted to watch one of those ‘big’ movies that I had never seen, and I wanted it to feel important. I quickly landed on Schindler’s List for this, as not only had I never seen it, but as a Jewish person, I felt almost an obligation to see it, and I even had felt a little guilty that I hadn’t before. Nonetheless, I decided that…

“You want to win? Change the .”

Certainly the weakest of the John Wick movies, but it certainly isn’t any less fun. Stahelski definitely reshot quite a bit of this, and it’s very clearly all the better for it. It’s also clear which bits Wiseman did, and well – they’re the worse bits. All the familial drama bits fall flat but when the movie gets going, it really gets going. The action and atmosphere still absolutely rock and the flamethrower bits are just so fucking cool. There’s also a shot earlier on which I thought was cool as hell. Really fun time at the movies!

“We are merely ing through history. This is history”

God level stuff all around. Spielberg is a mastermind and every frame is more stunning than the last. Unparalleled sense of adventure and mystery. Hard not to fall in love with this (and Ford) every time I watch it. A masterpiece.

“My dad has cancer”

(Rapturous audience laughter)

Stupidest movie I’ve ever seen. I want to make it clear that in no way did I actively seek out this movie, it was just the AMC Screen Unseen.

Honestly on reflection, I’m really not sure whether or not I’m being punked into thinking it’s actually a real movie. I truly don’t think anyone tried here. Whalberg is obviously obnoxiously bad, it’s shot and directed like a Nike commercial, and it is so…

“My destiny is more powerful than my will”

Oh hell yeah. Absolutely rules. Screw the haters, Ridley Scott is still one of the best to do it. Incredibly made, the battles are epic and masterful, the script is fantastic, the performances are superb. And of course, Ridley’s direction is truly honed, and he knows exactly how to make an epic and compelling film. This is what it’s about.
