Dans le dernier James Bond, Ana de Armas volait la vedette à Daniel Craig le temps d’une scène. Après ça, c’était une évidence, on voulait notre film d’action avec la belle. Bon. Ben c’est pas le film qu’on espérait au final. Pire, elle se fait voler la vedette à son tour par Keanu Reeves le peu de temps où il apparaît à l’écran. La faute en revient à une histoire de vengeance déjà vu 1000 fois. Pour lui donner un semblant d’intérêt ils font évolué le personnage dans l’univers de John Wick, comme ça, ça permet de broder des scènes avec les codes qui régissent ce monde d’assassins en faisant dans le fan service pour tromper l’ennui de son public. Et puis, pour faciliter sa quête vengeresse, les méchants sont marqués comme du bétail, donc facilement identifiables, et ils vivent tous dans un certain périmètre qu’il suffit de pointer sur une carte, donc facilement trouvables. Faut aussi se rendre à l’évidence, en plus d’une histoire dont on se fout, Ana de Armas n’est pas une reine de l’action à la hauteur d’une Michelle Yeoh. Elle en est même loin. Certes, elle s’amuse et nous amuse avec des grenades, des patins à glace ou un lance flamme le temps de quelques séquences, mais au corps-à-corps elle n’impressionne guère. Après, faut avouer qu’elle n’est pas non plus aidé par la réal… en même temps, fallait pas confier le film à Len Wiseman ! Non mais quelle idée.

Pour le grand film d’action ce n’est que partie remise Ana, arme toi de patience, nous on reste à l’affût…

Vous vous rappelez de la maison qui rend fou dans Les Douze Travaux d'Astérix ? Bon, et bien après s'être poilé devant les absurdités criantes de vérité sur les démarches istratives, voici désormais la vision cauchemardesque de la vie en copropriété où chaque recoin de l'immeuble est touché par l'insalubrité (que l'État fait mine de ne pas voir bien sûr). Avec pas mal de bonnes volontés, de coups de sang, d'humour et de larmes qu'on imagine nombreuses, c'est toute une galerie de personnages qui défile... "Cet immeuble c'est la en tout petit".

Le cinéma de Wes Anderson est toujours un ravissement pour les yeux, c'est comme ouvrir un livre pop-up et s'am à faire bouger les petits mécanismes à travers les différents décors en volume. Pourtant, depuis The French Dispatch, on ne s'amuse plus tellement. Certes, on peut éprouver un certain attachement pour ses personnages, mais quelque chose manque cruellement à son cinéma : l'émotion. À quand le grand retour ?

Où on tente de raccrocher les wagons pour faire en sorte que la saga ne soit en réalité qu’un grand tout cohérent. Voici donc venir les flashbacks sur les opus précédents qui viennent casser le rythme avant de révéler une évidence implacable aux yeux des protagonistes et du public, à savoir que Ethan Hunt/Tom Cruise n’est pas uniquement le sauveur du monde/cinéma : il est l’élu, le messie, l’être suprême. Et pour étayer ce raisonnement le film va se perdre dans des tunnels de dialogues interminables où les personnages plissent les yeux et sortent des phrases pleines de gravité, ponctué systématiquement par une musique qui fait BAAAAOOOUUM pour bien faire comprendre que le monde est au bord de l’extinction et qu’un seul homme sur Terre est en mesure de stopper l’ennemi. Cet ennemi d’ailleurs parlons-en c’est l’IA, une entité nommée l’Entité (bien vu), et pour contrer cette technologie Ethan Hunt est incarné par Tom Cruise, c’est-à-dire le rempart au numérique, il est le dernier homme analogique, celui qui prouve qu’il lui est supérieur, celui qui marche à l’ancienne et qui fait tout mieux en matière de spectacle (même si évidemment il est bien aidé par le numérique pour gommer tous les artifices, mais chut, ne brisons pas la magie du cinéma). Ainsi donc Tom Cruise doit plonger dans les Abyss, mourrir, ressusciter, et détruire une bonne fois pour toute Skynet - Oups ! - l’Entité afin d’empêcher le Jugement Dernier. Bon, McQuarrie n’est pas Cameron, cet opus de "conclusion" est trop long, on ne comprend pas toujours ce que doivent faire les personnages (ok, ça c’est plus ou moins la constante dans la saga), et pourtant, même si j’ai plein de problèmes avec le film, je ne peux m’empêcher de trouver ça quand même sympathique (c’est en revanche par conséquent l’épisode le plus faible). Tout le délire mégalo autour de Tom Cruise ça m’amuse, y compris quand Ving Rhames intervient en voix-off à la fin en mode Mufasa pour lui dire de ne pas oublier qui il est et qu’en plus il est génial. Et ben c’est vrai qu’il est génial. Lorsqu’il y a de l’action il donne tout, il soumet son corps à toutes les extravagances possible pour offrir un spectacle euphorisant, quand bien même le poids des âges commence à le gagner, mais il en joue avec générosité. La séquence du sous-marin marche hyper bien en salle, tout le monde retient son souffle. La séquence longtemps teasé avec les petits navions est chouette. On a aussi Hayley Atwell qui est belle (ils ne lui ont pas trouvé d’autre utilité que ça pour ce film, mais j’achète), il y a Simon Pegg qui lance des blagues et des regards de cocker, et enfin des connexions maladroites au premier volet, mais bon, pourquoi pas après tout.

La mission n’est donc pas totalement remplie pour ce supposé point final à une saga vieille de 30 ans, mais elle aura toutefois incontestablement marqué de son empreinte le cinéma d’Entertainment. Elle est de celle qui fait déplacer les foules dans les salles avec le seau de pop corn rempli à ras bord pour se gaver avec gourmandise. Elle est celle où Tom Cruise réalisa à plusieurs reprises l’impossible.

Le premier épisode est un peu timide, juste de quoi goûter du bout des lèvres cette potion nouvelle, en revanche les effets de celle-ci se font ressentir très vite à la vision de second épisode. La série est d’une énergie très communicative, il y a une maîtrise du rythme et de la narration qui font plaisir à voir, même si l’écriture semble plutôt convenir à celui d’un long métrage. Et l’humour est à la hauteur des espérances ! Les personnages sont attachants, Obélix est génialement écrit, la réalisation suffisamment inventive (surtout dans son dernier acte). On pourrait en revanche regretter le recours systématique à une chanson contemporaine pour créer le décalage, mais cette paresse humoristique ne gâche pas pour autant l’aventure.
Chabat nous colle le sourire jusqu’aux oreilles avec sa série drôlement bien gaulée.

Cinema Speculations is a 2022 nonfiction book by Quentin Tarantino. It's a collection of essays organized around "key American films from the 70s" which Tarantino saw in his youth, ranging from blaxploitation films to all the Best Picture nominees of 1970. It was inspired by the film writing of critic Pauline Kael.

The first and last chapters are autobiographical. Two other chapters are a homage to film critic Kevin Thomas, and a comparison of two generations of film-makers. The rest of the chapters are essays about the following films:

While on the one hand, the new Hollywood was increasingly asserting itself in the late 60/early 70s, old Hollywood was banking on, among other things, disaster movies with a cast of stars from another age and the promise of great spectacle and thrills. We can't say that these films have aged the best, but they laid the foundations of a formula that still applies today sometimes. An overview in 50 films.
