Deep Rising is so much fun! Treat Williams channeling his inner Han Solo, shooting machine guns you would see in a game of Duke Nukem, while trying to survive a deadly attack from sea monsters who decided to eat the guests aboard a fancy cruise ship.

It's okay to laugh at the cringeworthy CGI. Ever try to make a practical sea monster bigger than the Titanic? Man, these monsters are scary, and they want to eat like the hippos in Hungry Hungry Hippos. In all honesty; Deep Rising is a bootleg version of John Carpenter's The Thing, sold straight outta the trunk of an '82 Cadillac.

Stephen Sommers' Deep Rising was an absolute blast, really took me by surprise. A gory, fun 90's B-movie with an impressive combination of a campy monster flick and Lovecraft-horror. And you can tell the actors are having so much fun with the dialogue choices, especially Treat Williams & Kevin J. O' Connor. The CGI isn't great, but it has aged a lot better than some other movies. That "now what?!" ending absolutely rules!! I read it was supposed to lead into Sommers' King Kong remake.

Stephen Sommers, at one point in time, had the popcorn blockbuster figured out. This and The Mummy are similar in many ways (including Kevin J. O'Connor!!) but the overwhelming sense of adventure and fun is what stands out. A Lovecraftian horror action movie. Schlocky, stupid, plenty of monster tentacles, it has it all.

Sometimes you just need to watch an action packed low budget 90s creature feature starring badass Treat Williams to get through the day. Not only is he a ‘treat’ to look at but the cast is also staaaaacked. Holy hell.

Deep Rising is a ticking time bomb, there’s enough carnage, trigger-happy characters and comedic dialogue to turn your brain off to and enjoy, the perfect 90s popcorn flick! Goddamn, this one hell of a B movie! An entertaining, gory, disgusting creature feature with a fucking insanely STACKED cast. Like holy shit, I forgot about all the actors in this thing! Full of cheesy dialogue, wild characters, some great practical effects and a lot of absolutely horrendous CGI. I would love to see some kind of George Lucas-esque special edition of this baby, just refine the terribly dated effects and you'd definitely have a much more improved picture here.

deep rising is a good example of a decently made b-movie. it's extremely cheesy, and the cgi is a bit questionable at times, but it's still a fun watch. there are for sure a lot of things that just don't make any sense, though i will say that i enjoyed the action and it helped that i had famke janssen to look at. definitely not as good as i expected it to be, but i'm glad i put in the time to watch it.

Action!: The Campy, The Violent and The Plot Twist - Sommers' Camp

So in the grand scheme of creature films from the 90s, this one has been on my radar for a very long time. It's a one I've heard so much about but had no clue what it even was.

And you know what? For a 90s dumb movie that mixes several films altogether (The Abyss, Alien, Poseidon), it was very enjoyable. CGI seems outdated, but it contributes to the movie's charm and gives a nice touch to it. Ostensibly the film everyone wanted THE MEG to be: a big, weird, dumb, bloody B-Movie that’s just goofy enough but paints the ocean red whenever the monsters attack. Treat Williams is a solid Kurt Russell stand-in and it helps when Dean Cundey mans your Second Unit. One of the most entertaining genre movies from the late 90s.

“...NOW what?!”
I used to call this “R-Rated Spielberg” as its gory as hell and utilized Rob Bottin’s Cthulhuian designs and splatter well, but the tone is fun, the dialogue RAIDERS-esque and the cast is WAY too good for what could have been a crap-fest. That Sommers attacked this with a “B+ Movie” approach made it clear why Hollywood handed him some high end genre franchises. 
A total blast from start to finish. We really needed a sequel.

One of the stupidest creature features I’ve seen, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Treat Williams and Famke Janssen were the perfect 90s leads. Couldn’t believe it had Beni from The Mummy in there too.
