my parade: rained on

Same as before, with some lavish theatrical numbers. Fun addition of the synchronised swimming section. Barbra Streisand was still pretty great. A chore to get through as well.
"I think I'll marry him; I don't like paying for material."
Dear Barbra,
Happiest of birthdays—you remain the queen of celluloid! Many times I have celebrated your big day by taking in Funny Girl and bestowing upon you the gratuity of my thankful tears. In fact my squeeze and I had planned to do just that today, but when my beloved New York Knickerbockers chipped in to present you with a heretofore inconceivable nine-game winning streak it became evident that…
fanny’s love interests may not have lasted but those red nails sure did jesus

Barbra singing from a biplane as it takes off…Tom Cruise wishes
The sequel to Funny Girl, except now Fanny Brice (Barbra Streisand) mostly isn’t funny or quirky at all. Instead, she’s become a glamorous, imperious diva who seems a lot like Barbra Streisand herself, or at least the stereotypical image of her. Funny Lady has a ton of stage performances featuring Barbra singing unmemorable songs in the style of Barbra Streisand, rather than Fanny Brice. And then the off-stage plot focuses on Fanny’s relationship with her second husband (a rakish James Caan), with occasional appearances from her con-artist first husband (Omar Sharif). It’s all kind of a snooze.

This was not so good. James Caan is emphatically not Omar Sharif, and while that's kind of the point, Caan is clearly out of his depth. It's not a good movie but it has a handful of good scenes, including a many-years-later meeting between Fanny Brice and Caan's ex-second-husband character Billy Rose, where she reiterates her insistence that she decide things on her own time. Time is really important to Fanny Brice; she gives most of it to the stage,…
didn’t evoke the same emotion and wonder in me the way Funny Girl did :( but i did manage to burst into tears during the scenes with omar sharif and barbra streisand
For about an hour this sequel to the Oscar-winning Funny Girl is rock solid, with good pacing and visual pizzazz, but the second half doesn’t work as well, the narrative a little unwieldy and aimless. Streisand and Caan make a dynamic screen pair however, and those five technical Oscar nominations are well deserved!
i love funny girl. i would go so far as to say it’s my all time favourite movie. the character of fanny brice speaks to me more than any character i’ve ever seen on screen and barbra’s characterisation of her is an example of some of the greatest acting there is. who else wins an oscar for their first ever movie! it’s certainly no secret that i hate biopics, but funny girl is the one exception. so imagine how excited…
