When a would-be psychologist, curiously named Dr. Mumford, comes to the idyllic town of the same name and offers his talent for listening and a disarming frankness, the town's quirkiest citizens scramble for a seat on his couch. Mumford plays like a fairy tale fantasy. The ensemble cast makes it feel like a Robert Altman film and the nested storytelling made it interesting for the entire run time. Mumford didn’t really use Freudian psychology to tell its stories as much as it used listening to each character tell their stories. This was 1999 and the people of Mumford had a voice as long as they trusted their local psychologist: Mumford.
Loren Dean, Jason Lee, Alfre Woodward, and Mary McDonnell turned up the psychosexual energy in Mumford in creative ways. Mumford, himself, was a bit of a Cupid or matchmaker. Lawrence Kasdan wrote this creative play that is full of entertainment. The only fault I could find was the soundtrack wasn’t pleasant to me. However, that is subjective for each viewer. Nevertheless, I think Mumford deserves at least 3.5 stars.

One of the nicest things about this is it acknowledges how utterly WEIRD the human condition is, and then doesn’t try and to impose any moral judgement on it. I’m thinking of both Jason Lee’s autistic-coded MILF loving techbro, convinced he can make the perfect sex doll in his laboratory (man is twenty years ahead of his time) and Pruitt Taylor Vince’s elaborately 40s fantasy world, filled with hot landladies and bobby-soxers in pigtails. The sequence where Follett tears up from a stash of vintage stroker fuel (I’ll take “Secretarial Sluts”, thank you) in warm nostalgia is so sincere you find yourself laughing, but not at him.

It’s like the ultimate film to watch during the day. Sunny, small-town drama without too much conflict and a lot of wholesome self-discovery. There’s a therapist named Mumford in a town also called Mumford, who helps out a lot of local people with their problems simply thanks to listening. His unorthodox style and sympathetic ear is nice, and once it turns out that he’s familiar with personal problems and fresh starts, it’s easy to see where his empathetic side comes from. Doctor Mumford moves to and then starts up a Psychologist therapy practice in the rural city of Mumford.
He is a calm, pragmatic, and insightful physician, and the town takes a liking to him.
The story has some intrigue, but not anything controversial enough to make the local evening news. You can earn bonus points if you the television series ‘Unsolved Mysteries'.
The thing I like about this film (which I have seen numerous times) is the small town atmosphere and how problems can be solved when you say the “quiet part” out loud.

In the year that gave us rich megahits like The Sixth Sense, The Matrix and Toy Story 2, there are some great little movies that didn't make a big splash at the box office. Movies like Office Space, The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Iron Giant and this pleasant one called Mumford. A funny movie, but, more importantly, a helpful movie. Such an intriguing film from writer/director Lawrence Kasdan, Mumford initially feels like a Preston Sturges flick — psychiatrist with mysterious origins starts a practice in a small town, working to cure the patients who truly deserve it, while bluntly ignoring or callously redirecting the ones that don’t (not in an arrogant manner but one which implies that this is the treatment they need if there’s any hope for them). Along the way, he forms friendships, makes enemies, and even possibly falls in love. Then there’s such a ballsy amount of risk-taking that happens that I was honestly astonished. The locals who are friendly but mildly eccentric.
The unhurried atmosphere, in a world without much worry or stress.
It’s Hollywood’s small-town backdrop for a late-90s romantic comedy, introduced with a suitably chipper score.
Forcible quaintness pushes my buttons. And small-town characters that are little founts of ingenuousness and charm.

Oh man, what a great film. It's nice to see a movie that is cute without being cutesy, deep without being douchey, and has story to spare. Check out the extended back story scene for a delightful and oddly dark look into our hero's origins.
A fantasy, mostly a sexual, male fantasy. Jumps on the train of mining the ideal of picturesque Small Town, USA, filled with eccentric characters and complexities of life hidden under quaint facades, done in ensemble, that was so popular on television and in films in the 90s. Loren Dean is a predictably dull void at the center of this world. Maybe almost intentional—possibly making him a solid therapist, but unable to carry a movie.

I first saw this in theaters and I loved it. Can't explain why, but this film still hits all the right buttons for me. Just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. Feels like a Frank Capra film set in the late 90’s with a superb cast.
I used to think David Duchovny would have been the perfect pick for the lead role. But now, I'd say Loren Dean owns this. He's Mumford.
