Pretty good adaptation of an exceptional graphic novel. It just suffers from an incredibly rushed pace since they're trying to cram a lot of plot into a 90 minute runtime, which deflates a lot of the dramatic weight from certain story arcs. It's still a good, powerful film, but I strongly recommend reading the book first, if possible.

The screening I attended was followed by a live discussion with Marjane herself.
She came, smoked a cigarette, said, and i qoute,"You know these people they make 300 million dollar films and how are they? What was that one film?... Avatar.. You know? That was a shit film."

Marjane’s grandmother riffing a Godzilla movie is what cinema was made for.

The eternal cliché: I was a stranger in Austria and now I've become one in my own country. The woes of being an immigrant child. I understand and sympathize deeply with the protagonist in Persepolis, a bright young woman named Marjane. She’s astonishingly rude sometimes, but mostly she’s a funny, self-possessed character, weighed down by terrible circumstances.

The animation is surprisingly lovely. I’m generally not a big fan of animated films, or at least not enough of a fan to notice techniques and artistry, but I found many of the soundless portions of Persepolis to be quite beautiful. Iran.

Persepolis is so many things. This is a really beautiful and thoughtful exploration of growing up in a war-torn country under a repressive regime. The film also serves as a lovely coming of age biography for a headstrong young woman who wants to change the world. The film also serves as a history lesson for the colonialist origins of Iran's problems as well as Iran's development through the 20th century. The film also acts a touching demonstration of the impact of depression. It's a lot.

The animation is unique and beautiful, looking like a moving comic book. The voice acting is powerful and compliments the story. It's a great piece of work.
