A manifest destiny cannibal horror western that's as bleak and bloody as d but also has this unexpected off-beat rhythm to it that sometimes veers into the existential wandering of something like Jim Jarmsuch's Dead Man and other times into this strange, absurdist comedy about America literally eating itself. What a score.

It may be hard to believe now, but once upon a time — call it the late Nineties — a major movie studio sunk $12 million into a comedic western about 19th century soldiers who believed eating other humans endow folks with superhuman strength and the ability to recover from life-threatening injuries. When shooting on the film crashed to a halt after three weeks of interference and executive micromanaging, one of the suits at at 20th Century Fox hit upon an idea: fire director Milcho Manchevski — the Macedonian art house sensation whose devastating wartime romance Before the Rain was nominated for an Oscar — and replace him with Raja Gosnell, whose only feature credit to date was Home Alone 3.

Shockingly, it didn't work out.

The strong versus the weak and what a taste of power does to a man—you are what you eat. 

A unique, grimly fiendish period western psychodrama from hell with excellent direction from the late Antonia Bird and a soundtrack that latches itself to my essence like a damn facehugger. The cast is phenomenal all around but this is Robert Carlyle’s movie—the second he shows up as a window jumpscare this movie is just locked in, and for me the entire cave reveal sequence and what follows is one of my all time favorite horror set pieces—brilliantly edited and scored with pulverizing tension and a manic, seething with flesh lust lunacy Carlyle coming off like some crazy eyed backwoods Donner Party-Sawney…

The frontier as a stage play for our own evolving morality. Morphing into a system that intends to constrain us. A gorgeous western that also plays with the idea, the weight of cannibalism better than any film I've seen. Stacked cast, gorgeous vistas, and an all-timer score.

This movie was a major studio feature. Think about that for a second. This cannibal Western horror-comedy that doesn't give a shit about sticking to a singular tone; this furious deconstruction of American mythology and the cruel lie of manifest destiny; this collaboration between the screenwriter of Tower Heist, the cinematographer of The Man Who Fell To Earth, the composer of The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover, and the creator of Gorillaz - this was funded with studio money. Executives legitimately thought something this deranged would be a smash hit.

And you know what? It should've been. For all of the weirdness surrounding it, the story is remarkably…

Cannibalism as Manifest Destiny: when American claim it all, they'll just turn on each other. Creepy, darkly funny, and shot with a pleasingly nasty style. Feels like one of the last great American B-movies.
