im actually just in shock at how far we've come. these three went from investigating an urban legend and setting up little experiments to willingly exploring the wriggly side.
this one has so many cool images im just absolutely in love. stuff that i came to the series for, paranormal glimpses and such; but now they're surrounded by a surreal and otherworldly story which makes everything that much more impactful.
the kudo method returns in full force!! let's go kudo!! he's back with a vengeance in this one, full on bastard mode with a new and improved clump of hair to deal damage with. and what can you really say? it produces results. it does what he wants it to.…
Heroic lockpicking, heroic ghost talisman punching, heroic worm zone navigation to save his employee, Kudo fans will dine well on this installment!!!!
Hypnosis stuff in this is sick as hell, love this new psychic guy - the expanding scope of these is so good (Slit-Mouthed Woman cameo made me smile), love Shiraishi baby!!!!

45/53 of Podcast Macabre 2025- 5th time's the charm
I love that this begins with our psychopath investigator showing footage from the old film and going “guys, do you how we ended up in a universe entirely made out of Flash animation? Do you ? How fucking cool was that!?”
Coming back to this after five months away and I’d forgotten how much I love the universe…
Kudo: That's right, man! I always risk my (coworker's lives... and then mine, if there's time. But there usually isn't...) life!
Love that the first chunk is just an infomercial. Kudo's like "hey guys, let's watch some of that cool stuff we just did recently but don't . Conveniently located on this canon DVD, haha, what a neat idea. The DVD sales are steadily growing 👀... but it's not enough 👀."
Glad to see more of my favourite character; gross hair clod.
Only Shiraishi could make a movie this batshit crazy and the audience thinks, "He must be taking a little breather on this one".
Like all films in the franchise, this is a fucking wild ride, And the lead paranormal investigator is getting more insane, while still remaining somewhat heroic.
Thank God there's someone out there putting subs on these. I would hate to miss this amazing series.
I think that's an example of how words and stories get realized in real life.
starts as a kind of back-to-basics reset of the series momentum after file 04, but every familiar rhyme feels richer and larger, the universe so much bigger then self-contained local ghost stories as we start attempting to comprehend what enables all of them, the haunting monsters so far just being a front for far greater and more impossible forces. video, dreams, memory, and Eyes in a beautiful thematic dance around the comfortingly familiar assortment of background spooks, inspiring low-budget effects, and highly questionable Investigative Journalism. there are So Many Things wrong with jin kudo, but his bullheaded blunt force is adept at Showing Us What We Want To See, and makes a hero out of him every now and then. this probably has my new favorite exorcism sequence in any movie ever...i need more good ones in my life
I feel that the previous installment set the bar so high that this one, while still fun, doesn't quite sur it. Even so, I found it very entertaining and enjoyed every moment.
Kudo is very heroic, and the ending is incredibly exciting and full of adrenaline. Truly a fun and creepy experience from start to finish!
"the politicians when they saw this film were very excited" me too, kudo. me too.
It shows just how great a found footage/mockumentary director Koji Shiraishi is that this is one of his lesser efforts. There’s still plenty of ghost women, weird hair, spooky faces, and a more in depth trip into Worm Hell than usual. And of course the freeze frames to make sure you don’t miss any of the effects.
The Senritsu Kaiki File Kowasugi series is hard to find in the US, but I managed to find Files 5-7 and will be going through 6 and 7 soon. They follow a film crew documenting all kinds of paranormal activity in Japan (as is sometimes the case in his other work - notably Occult - Shiraishi plays the cameraman to explain what he’s doing there). In this one, the gang checks out a weird woman and runs smack into a curse and one of their own getting possessed. It’s all good fun and craziness, especially the final exorcism (that exorcist doesn’t get paid enough!).
Relentless J-Horror Halloween 3
Here we go again. I can't believe this is my third year of watching nonstop J-Horror in October. I guess I can stop once I the N3...
What a way to start J-Horror Halloween! Senritsu Kaiki File Kowasugi! Preface: True Story of the Ghost of Yotsua is a fucking delight, further cementing the masterful brilliance of this series. Here, Shiraishi builds a lot on the previous film, filling it with intrigue, in-series layers, and stress. Chika Kuboyama absolutely smashes this entry, being given a lot to play with. Her exorcism is truly spectacular. Kudo continues to be a nightmare, yet also redeems himself. And we get introduced to a distressing/exciting new character. It's not quite as mind-melting as File 04, but it's playing with a lot of fascinating ideas of where these terrifying ghosts/beings come from. Great stuff!
