Hollywood did Ernest Dickerson dirty, because anyone who directed a film like Demon Knight should be given blank checks for the rest of their life. Just a fact. What a stupendous gonzo-horror achievement. Bursting with goofy mythology, stunning creature design, and a stacked character-actor resume - this 90s Universal production is a blue-tinged nightmare of wit and siege conventions, and it's carried by Billy Zane and his smile.

A lean, mean, EC comics meets Evil Dead II siege narrative mashup loaded with amazing effects, a banger of a soundtrack, and a perfect cast of character actors doing some of their best work—a mid decade masterpiece filled with oozing green goo, faces punched in, the perfect cartoonish blend of action/humor, and demon Zane minions with electric eyes.

In short, this movie has everything I love in it—the perfect combination of over the top genre magic n mayhem which is fitting since one of my gateways to horror was in fact Tales from the Crypt the series. Legendary cinematographer Ernest Dickerson known for his ionate, energetic and colorful expressionism in the films of Spike Lee gets a shot at a studio horror movie and ambitiously shoots it as if he'll never get another chance. Part siege-western, part demon splatter movie, part Old Testament supernatural war, this thing is just front-to-back loaded with deep saturated primary color lighting straight out of Italy, cartoonishly exaggerated camera movement/canted angles, gleefully graphic monster gore coutesy of Nightmare on Elm Street FX legend Kevin Tagher (could not believe my eyes when the giant tongue started going into the exposed chest cavity), a murderers row of character actors hamming it up including William Sadler, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Dick Miller, CCH Pounder, Thomas Haden Church…

I love this motherfucker with all my heart. Jada as a sharp minded final girl? A bevy of amazing character actors having a fucking ball? Great, deeply visceral effects? Unabashed pulpy sensibilities? A marriage of the horrifying and the titillating? Billy Zane going full gonzo man with charisma on eleven? Ernest Dickerson in his bag as a director? Yes, please.

Sometimes I watch movies, bur tonight I watched a film. Billy Zane’s finest hour. William Sadler, Jada, CCH Pounder, Dick Miller, Thomas Haden Church, and Roger fuckin Rabbit in one fuckin movie? 🥹 The demon design is so fuckin good. Also Crypt Keeper is so cute. Need more of him in my life.

Forgot I watched this last week, absolutely slays. Zane, Sadler, Thomas Haden Church, CCH Pounder, the guy who was Roger Rabbit and the guy with the basement in Zodiac, and the great Dick Miller. Great fun. Also, why can't I stream Tales from the Crypt anywhere? Hey MAX, get on that.

I started this on Tuesday and then the internet started acting drunk so I gave up and went to bed and didn’t have a chance to finish it until tonight, but I have seen this so many times it didn’t ruin anything for me. People just love to slam the 90’s when it comes to horror movies and they really need to GTFO with that hateful untruthiness because movies like this one completely void that argument. Damn this is fun!

frights, camera, action!

I love me some Bordello of Blood but Demon Knight was always the gem from the crypt, mostly because of cowboy hat wearing, full of irresistible charm Billy Zane, who slices his hand open causing bright goo to ooze and unleashes demonic ghouls with neon green eyes and nipple rings—I just noticed this naughty body modification—that want to terrorize our stellar cast ensemble. All the Evil Dead gone gonzo in a gothic mansion vibes and the practical effects are fucking glorious; extra gooey and goopy, oh, did I mention Billy Zane?

Perfect fucking movie. Gruesome, grimy, fun as fuck with one of cinema’s best final girls.
