The Last Picture Show is sort of a masterpiece by design, its end of a world melancholia is set before any camera roll, Texasville a big middle age crisis movie about all the bad shit you accumlate since you left high school and how one tries to move around it might be described as its opposite: it just accumalate things, lots of losses, a few dodges, a couple of wins until getting breakfast in the morning. The original movie is treated as sort of a mythic text for characters in a way that reinforces their self-delusions (although the movie least succesful bits relate to this as well).

This review is for the black & white Director's Cut included with The Last Picture Show Criterion edition. I refuse to accept any other version of this film.

Look at that movie poster. Embarrassing. Terrible. Jacy Farrow grew up and became a Lifetime movie. The shit hot wet dream of Scorsese's Taxi Driver, now Moonlighting and fading into television oblivion. Don't we all grow up to become Lifetime movies? Digging out our old yearbooks in our heads and wishing past glories upon them. Satellites launched to nowhere, pondering nothing. Just bad hallucinations in the sky.

what a great feeling when a movie is exactly what you want it to be. this is a beautiful sunday morning type of picture, effortlessly moving between chill and funny and heartbreaking in a dusty little town populated by denim and dairy queens and budweisers and boots and mexican silver belt buckles and IGA pickles and brown lakewater and jeans with worn out circles where a can of chaw sits in the back pockets. i picked this because i'm currently reading of Endearment and wanted a visual Larry McMurtry dose. i've read The Last Picture Show but not seen the movie yet (because the book left me so powerfully depressed), so, more than wanting to see who the characters…

The new Criterion LAST PICTURE SHOW 4K set including the 2.5 hr B&W directors cut of this movie is one heck of a great thing. A real gem that’s been slept on for more than 30 years.

If The Last Picture Show is about what it feels like to be young in a podunk town like Anarene, Texas in the early 50s, then Texasville is about what it feels like not to be young anymore in the same place some 30 years later.

if The Last Picture Show was an elegy, this is a resurrection -- a sincere sequel to what is arguably Bogdanovich's best film (especially, if not only, so in its extended, black and white, director's cut) and chock full of potent character moments that feel as essential as anything in its predecessor; having this director's cut properly available on home video, finally, is an ecstatic achievement

America is a game show and sex is its last remaining pastime: in the end pretty much everyone loses, but at least there's always old friends to keep you company. Probably the best film about the Reagan era.

I am curious to see the theatrical cut—the modernity of color may have been thematically appropriate, much like Bruce and Madonna barging in on country radio—but the director’s cut is essential viewing, a sequel and an epilogue in one beautifully melancholy package. Although it tends to be busier and broader than its predecessor, the deeply-felt soap opera of Anarene is unmistakable. Bogdanovich avoids every obvious direction this story could go, carefully waltzing around possibilities in the same way his characters do, and having basically the entire cast return lends a visceral punch to the age of time. Not only an unsung gem, but also an all-timer of a special feature.
