did anyone ask for a mrs miniver sequel? no. but it gave us milf!greer content so who am i to complain.
This hit me hard in the heart
Nice and cozy follow-up to Mrs. Miniver (1942), but was it really necessary? Probable not, but at least there was some prestige attached to it. it touches the sentimental notes.
The original Mrs Miniver was a huge international hit when released during the Second World War, teaming Walter Pidgeon and Greer Garson as architect Clem Miniver and his wife Kay, characters inspired by the writings of Jan Struther.
Mrs Miniver was a fiercely patriotic film, and a reminder to the USA of what Britain was taking in rationing, nightly air raids, and bombings. This sequel though, titled The Miniver Story, takes place in peace time, and is largely concerned with troubles within the family, foreshadowed by Clem's narration at the start of the film.
This film gets a lot of bad press from those who find it weak, heavy-handed or simply sentimental. It may not have the power of its…
Giving this one star only bcos HOW DARE THEY?!! HOWWW?!! WHY THEY NEED TO DO THIS? IS THE FIRST FILM NOT ENOUGH? This had me f*cked up and it messed my feelings!
IM GONNA PRETEND THAT THIS FILM DOES NOT EXIST WHILE I CRY MYSELF TO BED TONIGHT!!!!
"...asombrosa película (superior a todas las demás que he visto de Potter), en efecto aún mejor que "Mrs. Miniver" (que es uno de los muy grandes Wyler), y en efecto una de las películas que mejor han hablado de un cierto espíritu británico que brilló en la 2ª G.M., del que hablaba con nostalgia Tony Judt poco antes de morir y hoy, desde Thatcher, Blair y sus sucesores, en trance de absoluta desaparición." (un blog comme les autres, 2011)
I didn't realise Mrs Miniver had a sequel until very recently, and having now watched it, that's... understandable.
The Miniver Story is just so flat. Almost all the cast have been swapped out from the original, and each replacement is vastly inferior. So much of the runtime is taken up with the question of whether the Minivers' drippy daughter will marry a patently horrendous army man twice her age or not - it's very hard to know why on earth we should care.
A handful of times, when it's just Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon together, the infernal thing sputters to life just a little bit. But only ever for a few moments. What a disappointment.
Don’t watch this movie. Don’t do it. Do not. Its not real. Its a lie. This movie does not exist
*insert Amy adams SCREAMING CRYING gif*
Our titular heroine charmed and uplifted us all -- held down the homefont, survived a war, lost a daughter in her arms, and slapped a Nazi, amongst other feats -- then returned to the screen only to spend most of the story aware of her imminent death and vaguely attempting to close any unfinished business. And yet we are not allowed the satisfaction of hearing her voice narrating her story. The actual Mrs. Miniver is silenced, her husband telling the tale in voiceovers instead.
Young Toby is on the list of contenders for Most Annoying Child Actors of All Time. Can someone stick a sock in that kid's mouth so we can hear more of Greer's lovely voice?
