- Indian horrors 2/2
There's nothing I love more than atmospheric horrors, especially ones that have a murky, unscrubbed floor-like feel to them. This one delivers. Tumbbad, for a horror with "bad" in the name, is the farthest from a bad thing. It was specially designed to throw you in an inescapable chokehold within the first 30 minutes, which is one of the most impressive openings ever. (Excuse the hyperbole.) Unfortunately, the horror kind of dissipated after that, but it remained coherent and riveting all the way. It's intense and dark, just the way I like my nightmares.
The adventure-adjacent elements balance out the bleak horror a bit, making it a thrill ride through and through. I'm not familiar with Indian horrors (or plain Indian cinema in general), so I can't really tell if there's more exemplary ones out there. But as far as folk horrors go, this visceral, wickedly gnarly film will likely not disappoint.
