Materialists

2025

★★★★ Liked Watched

Materialists is another showcase for Celine Song’s gentle, mature voice. It’s a refreshing romance that manages to be both fanciful and grounded, with an unabashed honesty tying it all together.

The trio all fit perfectly within Song’s very specific tone, never giving too much. Evans has the standout moments though, thanks to some brilliant writing.

A sophisticated look at love, settling, and the calculations of both.

Also: it’s a beautiful companion piece to Past Lives.

Karate Kid: Legends

2025

★★½ Watched

Karate Kid: Legends has all the right pieces, but feels chopped to bits.

Ben Wang is a good lead, and there are glimpses of authentic coming-of-age moments, but it’s all shortchanged by a horrendous edit, speeding through the story as fast as it can.

Disappointing.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

2022

★★★ 14

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness feels thrown together. Some of it works, some of it doesn’t, but it feels surprisingly bland. The story never connects emotionally, which makes it hard to care deeply.

For a multiverse movie, this felt weirdly contained, and honestly a little forgettable.

Elizabeth Olsen always shines as Wanda, and Cumberbatch has plenty to play with in these universes. There are flairs of Raimi’s style from time to time, and this is the closest we may…

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

2022

★★★★½ Liked 8

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is blockbuster filmmaking on another level. It sures the incredible first film with high stakes and and thrilling world-building.

The entire ensemble is phenomenal, but Tenoch Huerta bursts onto the scene with a brilliant, complex turn as Namor.

The cinematography, score, visual effects - everything is even better than before. Some of the best crafts in any Marvel film. A breath of fresh air all around.

It’s an emotional, dark journey, leading to a full-scale war, but always feels personal. This may be the best Marvel movie yet.
