The standout moment, for this first viewing, was the song Llorando, a haunting cover of Roy Orbison’s Crying performed by Rebekah Del Rio in the dead of night at the surreal Club Silencio. It is emceed by a Joel Grey-esque magician played by Richard Green, who wants us to know that the cabaret is all illusion. No hay banda. There is no band.

At home on New Years Day
Saw theatrical release in 2016 which did not leave a strong impression. Don’t know why because there is so much to love here— the pacing, imagery, and intercutting across time work so well in tandem. Second viewing had me caught up in the meditative quality that made it easy to accept the time dimension of the narrative. Renner had nothing to do here and other ing characters were cutouts, but Adams character and they way she played it made up for those inadequacies.
