12 Angry Men

1957

★★★★ Liked Watched

You wouldn't think 90 minutes of men arguing would make for a compelling movie, but 12 Angry Men proves otherwise Twelve nameless jurors deliberate over whether a young boy committed a murder, with one sole dissenter arguing in favour of the boy's innocence. A courtroom drama that's not even set in the courtroom itself, taking place in real-time as tensions boil over and these men are forced to re-examine their entire belief systems.

Breakin'

The 80's sure loved their dance movies, didn't they? From Fame to Flashdance to Footloose, it was a good time for teenagers to let out their frustrations via heavily choreographed dance routines. Breakin' follows in the mold of these movies whilst simultaneously capitalising on the growing popularity of hip-hop culture during the decade. It's less a documentary about George Lucas and more about the overly possessive nature of fan culture and how easily some…

The thing I love most about Mel Brooks genre spoofs is that they almost always come from a place of love. You can feel his appreciation for the subject matter he's parodying; whether it's westerns, historical epics or in this case, the Universal Monster movies of the 30's and 40's. Young Frankenstein is not Brooks funniest movie, but I would argue it's his most accomplished from a directorial standpoint.

The atmosphere here is simply immaculate. There's moments in Young Frankenstein…
