This is a blind buy that I don't regret in the least. Vinegar Syndrome's edition is top-notch. The highlights of this wonderful film include:

--Goonies vibes
--Kids who get visibly dirtier as the movie progresses
--Helpful subtitles for a hard-to-understand youngster
--Subtitles for magical commands that include icons denoting their meaning (a castle means "set up camp")
--The introduction of "woodsy bastard" into my personal lexicon

I need to be sure to buy a blueberry pie for my next viewing.…

The animation is beautiful, but the songs... are terrible. I long for animated films that don't feel the need to cater to the entire child population via bland songs and funny animals. In of the latter, however, Ewan McGregor as the cricket holds this film together. Much of the other voice acting work pales in comparison. No kid will question the film's implicit religion vs. fascism opposition, but I hope some thinking adults will.

More Americans need to watch this film. It is every bit as essential as the 1950 noir Gun Crazy in its exploration of the American fascination (obsession?) with guns. Though part of the rape-and-revenge subgenre, which is often exploitative in nature, this film is surprisingly restrained in depicting the actual rape, which manages to be harrowing and emotionally effective without feeling gratuitous.
