Born near the West Virginia border in Christiansburg, VA; 20th Century Fox's go-to director for simple rural drama (even trusted by Daryl Zanuck to make his ion project, Wilson, the most expensive film Fox had ever made); and one of the directors with the most films set in the South, Henry King is my pick for the best Southern director of all time — yet hardly anyone has written about his life, career, and works. I've now watched every extant Henry King film (with the exception of The Woman in Room 13, a print of which does exist in the UCLA archive) and have assembled this rough guide that should serve as a starting point for anyone interested in bringing King out of his relative obscurity.
