Ultimately a interesting piece of work and very insightful in applying a materialist analysis on America’s current state of political radicalization. However this felt a bit exploitative, and sensationalistic at times. Kelly is obviously mentally unwell and his family is in disorder from this. While Andrew did his best to help, I don’t believe a short term and unreal seeming inclusion in a documentary will help in the long run, and will just add more unneeded chaos and “narrative” to Kelly’s worldview. Hopefully the family can learn from this experience and put in the work over the long term to get Kelly on the right track again.

They are going to remake this in 30 years and instead of being about hippies it will be about 2010’s influencer culture degrading into this pit of a decade we live in now. Shasta will have a failing only fans, Wolfmann will be a microdosing nerd-ass Silicon Valley overlord, doc will be brain dead from having hit the fent cart too many times in high school, The Golden Fang will just be the Tate brothers, Bigfoot will be the same damn guy except for a blue lives matter sticker on his truck, and it will be horrible. First as tragedy than as farce.

Really felt like Korine was trying to channel Lynch here, and didn’t reach the highs of his previous or any of Lynch’s work. Still very interesting but lacks the oomph.

Part 2 of my summer Korine Bender

Leaves more questions than answers upon rewatch.

I learned from watching Korine’s Letterman interview that the title of this film comes from Gummo Marx, the 5th Marx brother who liked to dress in drag and didn’t like preforming comedy. In other word an outcast among outcasts. Although Korine said not to read into the name, this movie sure seems to feature a lot of Gummos. 

Korine’s biggest strength as a director in my opinion is portraying the odd as if it is normal, and the grotesque facets of humanity as almost sympathetic. It is unclear whether some of the characters in this film have sympathy themselves, especially Tummler, but even as he pulls the plug that holds an old woman to life he comes of as a curious child, and certainly not driven by malice despite the consequences of this action.

In fact nobody in this film comes off as exactly malicious (except for the car pervert), despite all of the rampant cat killing, child neglect, irresponsibility, and wonton violence. Neither does anybody seem cold or cynical, this just seem to be people existing in their circumstances, and their actions to be more of a reflection of the envíen than anything inherent to a particular person. 

Negligence and neglect seem to be a big part of this film however. Children roaming around the streets with guns drinking beer and huffing glue, while their parents are nowhere to be found. However this same type of inaction is found in The  Bunny Boy who sort of just drifts through this town with no agenda or responsibility. His inaction seems to put him in a more well off position than what is around him. As he is able to fend off the younger boy’s attacks in the beginning of the film by playing dead, and is also able to find the missing cat at the end of the film through his idle and aimless wanderings, while those who are actually looking for it are less successful.

There is a lot of choices and little pieces of information Korine gives in this movie, and they all seem very intentional. Trying to analyze and put them together one can come to very much conflicting and confusing conclusions. The closest I could come  to find some sort of ethos to this movie while analyzing it was some sort of deconstructive anti-art message, but even that seems to be grasping. Many strange happening, mixed messages, undecipherable characters, and uncanny feelings, that ultimately don’t come together to a satisfying conclusion, but hey, isn’t that life?
