It's very funny that Sylvester Stallone has a non speaking role in this 1970s detective movie much like Schwarzenegger did in The Long Goodbye

I genuinely think I would have liked this a lot more if there weren't two separate reveals that a character is the child of another character. Just seems silly and over the top. Other than that I enjoyed the Peckinpah esque nihilism. A lot of great quotes that you repeat in your head and then think "wait what does that actually mean". Very much a writer's movie and you gotta appreciate those when they show up. It's a very specific vibe

Some prime Greater Vancouver Area in this. Almost cried at Tony Todd's scene. Easily the best one

Impressive and competent at times and hilariously inept at others. Glad it exists

Pitch perfect adaptation of the source material for better or worse. The cinematography and color grading perfectly mimics comic ling and composition. Ray Stevenson was a real one for this

De Niro so clearly did not give a shit lol. Dakota Fanning carries

Really fun and breezy despite the subject matter being insanely obtuse.

A melting pot of The Hitcher and The Vanishing. Some good old fashioned cathartic American violence. A fantasy in which the American everyman can be a hero. Tight and effective

Hard not to see how every movie musical that came after is indebted to it

At least as good in the scare department as the original although the larger budget kind of betrays the material. There's a lot of padding and at no point does it feel like Sarah Michelle Gellar is in any real danger.

Kevin Kline carries

Kind of like if you made a horny 16 year old direct Uncut Gems

I wanted to love this because I loved Revenge but where the pulpy accents worked so well in that movie it kind of betrays the material here. Of which there isn't much despite the movie being over two hours. Feels like a vignette in an anthology stretched to its furthest possible conclusion. The technical elements are outstanding and the performances are pitch perfect but as a whole it feels like a better idea of a movie than a movie. Also the "Harvey" thing is suuuuuper tacky.

I wish I bought into this more. Technically it's brilliant and the music is AMAZING but I didn't connect with the characters and story all that much. A lot of the interpersonal drama feels extremely forced and contrived. Zendaya is the only one of the main cast who I think really pulls it off. It's ultimately just ok

This never really comes together in a way that's greater than the sum of its parts but it's definitely not the worst cop movie I've ever seen

The third act stumbles a little bit but a really taught thriller for the most part. Welle's screen presence is unmatched

The bullet whizzes being louder than the actual gunshots. Cinema

Lots of transcendent stuff, but idk it's just lacking something for me compared to his other work

There are a LOT of flaws with this movie but I had so much more fun with this than the first one. I'm actually pretty forgiving if you can get the vibe right and this does.

Oh my god this is such a disaster. Trying to do to many things at once and none of them well. The ending in particular is so bad it's hard to describe. I really wanted to like it and I did enjoy a lot of the Cronenberg esque futuristic stuff and not so much the "what Kathryn Bigelow thinks about the LA riots". I'm glad she decided that the system will save us in the end though. That's really good to know.

A three hour trainwreck. Fantastic

This is such a weird story to try and craft a narrative out of it's no wonder so much "creative license" is used lol. It's fine, the sound design is really solid and the performances are pretty decent. It is a movie that exists.

Tbh I think this is actually the worst one. I hate SPIRAL a lot but at least it got the look and feel of a Saw movie mostly correct. There is one redeeming quality of this movie and that is Tobin Bell's cameo the rest is lazy crap. Logan is so awful, even Hoffman had more charisma. The traps aren't even that good and the gore is pretty tame compared to previous entries. Everything about it just sucks, anything that makes me think I was too harsh on SPIRAL is some grade A garbo

Almost entirely irredeemable. Adrian Brody's performance in particular is brutally bad, everybody else is like fine but nobody is doing their best work here. The brilliant character work of the original is poorly imitated by a flat and overly sarcastic 2010 ass script. Not fun at all even though the premise feels like it should be

Consistently impressed by the character work in this. A gold standard for ensemble action flicks

  This one is straightforward and  very accessable to North American audiences, it is a brutal home invasion slasher first and foremost. Probably the easiest recommendation on this list for any horror fan

• Revenge

  A bold and intense film that very much deserves induction into the NFE hall of fame. A refreshing update to the revenge thriller genre

• Irreversible
• Titane
• Frontier(s)

  This film might be even more depraved and fucked up than Martyrs. Truly visceral in every sense of the word. It's well made and worth a watch if you're in the right headspace for it, I do not recommend it otherwise

• Satan
• High Tension

  For better or for worse this is the most accessible NFE film for North American audiences. A decent if simple slasher with a dumb as shit twist near the end that feels like something out of the 80's

• Trouble Every Day

  Often gets associated with NFE but I don't think it shares most of the hallmarks of the genre. I think the only reason it is included in NFE lists is because of the rape scene at the end. Compared to most other NFE films it is very tame and more interested in atmosphere than gore for the most part. It's a fine art film but I think it's somewhat overrated
