Zach’s review published on Letterboxd:
Marriage Story is a beautifully emotional, yet oddly charming film that showcases some of the best writing, acting and directing of the year.
Writer and director Noah Baumbach crafts an emotional and personal tale that feels real, yet cinematic. The screenplay is extremely riveting and I caught myself being so invested into every word the characters were saying that I forgot I was watching a film. Another strength in the writing is the fact that both sides of the divorce are fully realized, and that no person is painted as the clear right side.
The writing is elevated to even greater heights due to the performances. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson both deliver career best performances, adding likability yet flaws in their characters. Both actors have amazing scenes that definitely their case for winning the Oscar come February. Another knock out performance is Laura Dern as the compelling, yet ruthless lawyer. Laura Dern is at the top of her game here and I definitely would be in full of her receiving the award for the "perfect mother" scene alone.
Marriage Story is brilliant plain and simple. It is a nearly flawless film that made me laugh and cry, but in the end left me feeling happy that I was able to experience such a masterful film.
