anyway, now, that I’m older, I know these movies definitely had to have sucked, right? but she was a storyteller. she made spun that pulpy, soap-opera straw into an airy-thin gold, like it was just for me. she made shit up that didn’t even happen, but her additions always made it better. and she always told the sordid shit with a little mischievous, conspiratorial grin — yeah, this is the good part.

so you know, it’s one thing to a feeling, and it’s another to feel it. and this made me feel it. I feel like she would’ve liked it. especially the ending. 

I wonder tho — how would she have done it better tomorrow?

so going into this, I already knew my review was going to be “we have inside llewyn davis at home,” but instead I’d like to apologize to everyone I told this was gonna be bad/I wasn’t gonna give a fuck about it. 

because it was actually pretty good? like, I actually enjoyed myself basically the whole time.  

some thoughts:
1) god bless pete seeger. what a gem. I was so preemptively sad for bob to disappoint him, but when it finally came around, I kind of reveled in it. getting older is learning to disappoint people sometimes, and the inevitability of that damage is maybe the thing that we all have to come to know. 

2) I melted every time Joan gave him that look. so many nice human moments in these romances, even if they’re somewhat superficial, you know? and that’s ok. 

3) timmy, I had my doubts, but — pretty good.

I expected it to devastate me all over again, but I was surprised at how much more I laughed, how much harder I smiled, and how much hope I had even when I was misty at the end, again.

Good movies make you feel, and usually the feeling is the same every single time. They coerce or comply you to cry or they leave you brimming with a burning, something like hope, power. But I wonder if great movies keep their capacity for the unexpected. If they change shape or shift underneath us — like a light-switch that somehow isn’t quite where your fingers it being.

Anora feels like that to me, and I hope it stays like that forever. God, this is a great movie.

I don’t know shit about playing poker, and this movie just made me more confused whether that’s a good or a bad thing. So, I made this pro/con list for being a poker savant:

Pros:

Cons:
- possibly millions of dollars
- cars
- travel to beautiful, semi-obscure European getaways
- eva green in a plunging neckline
- slick, tailored suits
- abs, blue eyes, and the ability to make a quarter-zip look good (ok, I think this has less to do with poker and more to do with being a sexy secret agent, but like I think it’s adjacent)
- dominatrix sesh w/ mads mikkelsen to decompress after a big win

actually, I don’t know anything about how pro/con lists work either.
