Heyooo.
I finally got around to watch this cosmic classic and it was certainly something.
A powerful machine that can control the sixth sense has killed it's creator and sent his associate into an asylum - now, a psychiatrist becomes determined to continue the experiment.. with horrifying consequences.
So, positively this film is so gross. Practical effects galore, gooey, phallic symbolism, grotesque imagery. This film has it all. It was glorious. It's based on a Lovecraft short story which I listened to afterwards on Youtube, it's basically the beginning or what would lead to the rest of the film, just consisting of the creator and associate. Interesting story.
Props to the effects team led by Mark Shostrom and John Carl Buechler. I was a bit shocked because usually I just cheer it on but I found myself so grossed out.
The main cast consisting of Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton and Ken Foree is just so great and more than enough to keep it entertaining and their dynamic with each other was quite intriguing.
Storywise, it's quite straightforward - shit happens, someone dies, someone survives and that survivor now has to prove their innocence or sanity and more shit happens. Which is not a bad thing! It was fun to watch the trio try to figure out if they can use the machine for good (bc Barbara Crampton plays a scientist) and if not, how to destroy it. It's great and doesn't overstay it's welcome.
I was a bit hesitant to watch it because I heard there's some SA and yeah, it was quite uncomfortable so just a heads up.
Still, this horny and gross film is worth watching and a classic for a reason. 80s horror is just the gift that keeps on giving. And Barbara Crampton. 🩵
