Sheesh. A monster of a movie.
You know those movies you watch that are silly on the outside but are much deeper when looking closely? Love Exposure pulls an opposite of that. On the surface it's a cutting melodrama of religion, lust, family, and love with spiraling character studies about the shackles and the liberties of love, alongside subversive and perversive extremes. Yet one could break down the inciting incident for our protagonist to a single thing: an erection.

Continuing to dip my feet into French New Wave.
Varda has a sharp mind, incorporating strong mise en scene that gives density to the script. Cleo’s outlook on the world and her self image sways through stark blacks and pure whites backdrops as she grapples with fleeting existence.
It was a bit too meandering for my taste, but I now know that the narrative isn’t the point. I’m sure a revisit down the road will improve my reception to this movie and I feel more prepared for other Varda works.
