Re-Animator was one of the 80s horror classics that I first experienced on home video (Vestron's VHS release, to be precise!), so I was thrilled to catch a 40th anniversary screening of the newly remastered 4k edition on the big screen. It's my favorite Stuart Gordon film, and probably my favorite film of each of the cast in it (from Jeffrey Combs' Herbert West, to Bruce Abbott's Dan Cain, Barbara Crampton's Megan Halsey, Robert Samson's Dean Halsey, and of course David Gale's Dr. Hill). It's as funny as ever, and the grisly effects still hold up 40 years later. To quote Edward Van Sloan: "It is one of the strangest tales ever told. It deals with the two great mysteries of creation; life and death. I think it will thrill you. It may shock you. It might even horrify you. So, if any of you feel that you do not care to subject your nerves to such a strain, now’s your chance to uh, well — we warned you.”
