Incredibly human, incredible images, incredible movie.

In the weirdest way, it was as if I could hear deeply in my head. Narrating from somewhere within. And not in a sense that I felt a particular relation to the film and its events, but rather i became so intimate with the film, that I felt it so powerfully. I guess I don’t really know what feeling I’m describing, nor if I’m making any sense in describing it, possibly it is just the feeling of cinema that we all crave, perhaps something else but regardless this movie felt special. Something really special, it’s gentle and yet still somewhat transgressive approach to this infatuation found its place in my heart, and I’m happy I can add it to the list of those that remind me of what the movies are all about for me.

I was inevitably going to be satisfied by Parker Posey and Gena Rowlands, but further discovering it is not a simple romance movie but rather spends 90% of its runtime following an anxious and distressed parker posey crying and screaming at herself, it is simply too good! This movie, if nothing else, shows just how underrated Parker is as a dramatic actress! Yes she is easily one of the funniest people alive and yet she can deliver tears and despair too, a true legend.

And never look back.

Mike Leigh is the greatest living storyteller.

Really was not expecting much from this but it’s kind of a niche little gem? Enough has been said about the homeeoritcism and of course I’d have preferred it if it was explicitly a piece about lesbianism but I think it’s coming of age element is quite tender and sweet, not as cheesy as I even expected, just really heartwarming. Feels in the world of fucking Amal and Blue is the warmest colour etc.

Like all Cassavettes films I’ve watched so far, I expect this one to grow on me. But ever so sublime regardless.

Quite magical, even if a bit cheesy. Definitely not Haynes at his best but maybe Haynes at his sweetest?

Deeply deeply plaguing movie. Fassbinders take on Sirk is vivid and enchanting in its haunting and devastating story.

The way the light bounces off of them both so beautifully. Others may think of sunrise as the dream, the ideal moment, but is this not the dream? True and utter fate.

Bloody wanker, the door slid!

It is simply so breathtaking how, without any notable change to the lighting or image itself, Moodysson manages to go from horrific bleakness to vividly beautiful, though simultaneously melancholic and crushing, images like that of Volodja with his wings. It’s all so haunting, and so so beautiful.

A beautiful slice of life treasure. Liza is so incredible, a movingly tormented performance balanced out by those moments of joy you only get from someone who is movement embodied. Definitely outdated in many ways, but for 1970 really not too bad. Junie Moon I love you ❤️

Thank you to my lovely friends for watching an early screening of this short. I can say Im quite proud of it.

Magical. Whatever smaller issues I have with this as a film are honestly so dismissible, it’s simply too delightful to see bjork in her full glory. Sincerely I believe she may be our greatest living poet, and her visionary talents in the several artistic mediums displayed here prove to be entirely unmatched. I feel lucky to be able to see this kind of work in the present and to be alive at the same time as Bjork, it is a sensation I hope nobody dismisses.

Absolutely blown away by this one. Tilda does interior acting so well and here it’s on a whole other level. Absolutely everything you want from a performance like this, the unravelling is so sublime. She manages to completely shatter in front of us without any drastic change and yet so deeply present. I also absolutely ADORED the camera work in this, there are such great long shots and it uses movements of the camera so subtly and so impactfully. It’s also directed so amazingly, the uses of visions/hallucinations and how they transition in and out of the reality. And god Tilda is so good here I cannot say it enough, one of the absolute greatest working if not ever.

What if you were reading a book and. the punctuation was all over the place At first it would be quite. frustrating and you would wait for it to inevitably break up your reading again although you can not predict it and it could leave pages upon pages without anything leaving you constantly wondering "when is it gonna happen again" and after each action you. are hit with the questions "what is she thinking?, how do they? know each other, When is it gonna happen again?" but rather than ruin the story, it is a blessing for these. frequent. questions. make you tensely present and aware of everything within. This is exact.ly what Memoria so masterfully does.

Never has a movie been so present, within each frame projecting a strongly defined image, a perfect and profoundly interior wealth of emotion and ruminations. The innate tension of the movie, all of its silences, makes for the most singularly intimate and infatuatory experience.

Apichatpong manages to do something that it is so beautiful and tranquil but simultaneously accomplishes something so utterly haunting and brutal. Within Tilda you can see the deepest darkest plague, it is torturing and simultaneously allows for direct with all the senses. He allows things to be both at the same time: beautiful and painful, intriguing but disruptive, frustrating but grounding.

Memoria is poetry, and like the best poetry it defies its simple form and wraps itself around your mind, allowing you the gift to feel and think upon the densely beautiful world around you. It is nothing short of meditative, and is profound beyond the deepest of expressable statements, because just like that sound, it truly cannot be described; it can only be experienced.

So wonderfully fleshed out and beautiful. There’s something so distinct in the writing and performances that really manages to give you this instant and full sense of each of the characters. That first brunch scene did this especially, everything felt so real and minimal and yet each character is fully present in all their interest and traits and situations and stories etc. as if you were the 5th person at the table. And then Jill Clayburgh’s performance is just nuts. Few performances have felt so deep, lived in and truthful. Feels like quite a shame that I don’t see much of any other lead performances from her out there.

With Poison comes the most visceral understanding that film is poetry! Queerness is the absolute elephant in the room, and like a poisonous fume it seems to affect everyone surrounding it. Many of these shots feel ingrained into my mind since I first viewed it. The use of the genet quotes, the shots in “hero”. Haynes has such intense brilliance in allegory and images that create such rich emotion and do so much to provoke thought. Haynes does not make a stance on homosexuality in a moral sense nor does the film show much care to answer the more political questions that arise in the horror segment, rather this is deeply a movie for mood. It’s an expression of the distress and bombardment of horrors and images we witness as queer people, the sensationalising of life through monstrous images, queerness as a dying flame behind bars, queerness within a child abused, and queerness as that which cruelly disfigures you - all - poisonous.

Amazing how beautiful these images can be in such simplicity. There's something almost nonsensical about watching a movie consisting solely of something you can look up and see so easily, but then that itself is almost what makes a piece like this so vivid and beautiful: that an image upon a screen can be as beautiful and atmospheric as the real and commonly seen thing, if not somehow beyond that, all from the confines of the black bars on all sides. And from that image is projected such peace and bliss of the simple beauty of the skies. That peace feels important here and noteworthy especially when understanding that benning produced this as an anti-war film. I have seen before the argument that "there can be no such thing as an anti-war movie, there are only war movies." so to say that there is no way to create a pro-war movie, and that the depiction of war alone is immediate enough. And though I agree with this argument for films that depict war so explicitly, Benning accomplishes something here that renders it false to some degree: this is the definitive anti-war movie, for this is the true absence of war.

So beautiful, so calming and dreamlike. Just in love with the concept of ambient cinema this presents, a cosy feeling, images of atmosphere and essentially nothing else. How beautiful.

Immediately obsessing from the first sight of Isabelle Huppert. Only the second or third time I’ve seen her in a film but she is already just one of my favourites ever. Her talents of performance are beyond this dimension, the vivid story she is able to tell, projecting as much emotion power and soul into the lens as there is light in the frame. And here in the pages of Hal Hartley’s tale spun of blood-stained gold, Isabelle is a transfixing figure, one to relate to and find comfort within. Hartley’s atmosphere is so wonderfully distinct, so cruel and yet so sincere. There’s a beautiful crudeness done with eternal heart and a tearful hope that one could atleast be given the chance to be optimistic.

The definition of a perfect movie. Everything down to each technical aspect simply WORKS! Brilliant acting from everyone (especially an extremely deserved academy award to Julia Roberts), Brilliantly and tightly written, amazingly directed by one of our best working, shot so phenomenally by Ed Lachman, Thomas Newman’s score is amazing too I mean it just works!!! If there are movies that are “acquired tastes” this sits at the complete other end of the spectrum. It’s just so tightly and perfectly done, with so much heart and ion, it’s funny sad dramatic and intense, it’s a romance and a thriller, it’s an underdog story and it’s all about community. What’s not to love?

• Crash

  The single greatest modern allegory. Masterful work on the extents and relationship of violence and pornography. Beautiful work.

  Basically the same message as Crash, same director, one of the great examinations of pornography and its overwhelming control of behaviors

• Showgirls

  A vehichle for controversy, asking why nudity and sex is scandalous but violence is okay. Also just one of the funniest movies ever, I could quote it endlessly.

• Funny Games

  Probably the boldest and best articulate critique of the desensitization of violence in media.

• Anora

  Great example of the desensitization of violence in practice. On the surface known as a comedy and romance but really quite devastating as it's looked at deeper.

  Hot gay sex, the mafia, a heist, romance, guns, violence. What more could you ask for?

• Brain Damage

  The greatest gayest funniest horror comedy ever. So silly so brilliant. Elmer my sweetheart little blue penis alien <3

  Andie MacDowell + Writer of Notting Hill = excellence. Can’t stand Hugh grant but i can get past it!

• Love & Basketball

  Such a fun cool (criterion approved) romcom. The kind of romance you only see in movies and isn’t that the sweetest. 

• Plus One

  Modern romcom sure but still feels sort of timeless? Jack Quaid is obviously romcom royalty being Meg Ryan’s daughter and he’s not on her level but he inherited some undeniable charm and he’s really good. Maya Erskine is also like soo excellent might I add. Just sweeet 🥰

• Safe

  The most impressive transformative performance ever put to screen. Thrilling horrifying paranoid amazing. One of the greatest written allegories in film. 

• sex, lies, and videotape

  Again Andie MacDowell but this is one of my favourite films ever really. So excellently written, understands all the acute details and nuances of these amazingly written characters. And so well directed, insanely well acted and just amazing all around. Psychosexual study on relationships and entanglements just ticks every box for me. Also the lowest budget movie ever to win the Palme D’or! And given by head of the jury that year Wim Wenders. Very Impressive!

• A Woman Under the Influence

  When Gena unfortunately ed I saw every actor I followed say something about it. Everyone talked about how inspiring she was. How perfect. God they were right.    Julianne Moore as Carol 
   
   I it that before this I was never truly infatuated with the work of Julianne Moore. I had never thought of her to be bad by any means but nothing had engaged me to a true degree. That was all changed after seeing Safe. What Julianne does here is so masterful, you cannot take your eyes off of her. From supplements I’ve seen on the criterion (so happy I bought) I can just tell how incredibly visionary this performance was. A truly breathtaking godsend that has made me see Julianne in a whole new beautiful light, absolutely one of our best working today. 

3. To Die For

   Nicole Kidman as Suzanne Stone
   
   Perfectly calculated and layered. Nicole Kidman is already my favourite actress of all time but this performance is so powerful and perfect, it stunned me from the get go. The layers of comedic performance, played with such detailed relationship of a certain campiness and a fierce seriousness, work so well as they are reinforced by moments that create a powerful empathy to Suzanne and Moments that show a chilling villainy to her figure. A masterful performance that truly makes the movie*. Nicole Kidman absolutely rocks my world!
   
   
   *(but said in no way to underestimate the amazing feats of Gus van Sants direction, Some of my all time favourite editing from Curtiss Clayton, a fabulous script from buck henry, and all the other various aspects that make this a masterpiece).

   Never have I seen such powerful and pulsating desire so beautifully captured in its restraint.

   A performance that completely ascends space and time   

8. Paris, Texas

   Literally everyone. Everyone!
   Natassja Kinski, Harry Dean Stanton, Dean Stockwell, Hunter Carson, Aurore Clement. everyone! Just true magnificence in every frame.

9. Serial Mom

   Kathleen Turner as Miss Beverly Sutfin!
   
   Simply the greatest comedic performance I mean my god! It’s so well done so hilarious. She knows exactly where to place every beat, knows what to play real, knows what to play campy, knows when to be scary, knows when to be serene and can even accomplish absurd concoctions of all the above. So many perfect little choices too. It’s little things like at the start, as she imitates the bird calls rather than an attempt at a whistle there’s that stupid “oooie” that I just cannot get over. So phenomenal and delectable, I will never wear white shoes after Labour Day!

Films on filmmaking

• Adaptation.

  Favourite movie ever. Most insanely perfectly densely layered piece of fiction. 

• Seed of Chucky

  Film set murder, John waters as a Hollywood paparazzi-man, Jennifer Tilly X2. What more is there to ask for">Super 8

  Like it’s literally the title of the movie.

• Orlando

  Revered for its insanely breathtaking costume and set design, and visuals overall, but what is so insanely perfect about this film is Tilda Swinton’s performance! A very beautiful film about love and, in some ways, freedom. 

• The Squid and the Whale

  Very personal fave for me. Watched it in the middle of my parents divorcing. It’s so good. Feels like an essential in learning the codes and conventions of the indie Baumbach film. 

• Elephant

  Very nauseating film, as much as this film would low-key get great to go into blind, this is about a school shooting! Very melancholic, very well done. 

• Nowhere

  Gregg Araki my absolute GOD, his crazy cult classic is such a crazy fun time brimming with teen angst and bisexuality. 

• Buffalo '66

  Weird and beautiful, Vincent Gallos amazing feat of writing directing leading and scoring this movie is enough to leave you in awe. That put alongside the cinematography of Lance Accord (my fav cinematographer ever, cinematographer for lost in translation, Marie Antoinette and my fav OAT adaptation) and amazing ing performances from Christina Ricci and Anjelica Huston (Addams family reunion oddly) makes for a beautiful time. 

• Birth

  MY FAVOURITE ACTING PERFORMANCE OF ALL TIME! Nicole Kidman is always amazing but this is the most remarkable feat I’ve seen by anyone. Genuinely I can say that I have never seen a performance even on par with this. Beautiful film balancing the philosophical question of reincarnation with delicacy but a confident boldness. Jonathan Glazer is truly amazing and, though Kidman is thee star here, his directing shines here beautiful. Also great soundtrack 

• The Last Days of Disco

  Chloe Sevigny is the ULTIMATE IT GIRL. This is just such a great movie and makes me want to move to New York so desperatelyyyy. 

• Black Girl

  Absolutely remarkable movie on racism and isolation. Only an hour long and available in full on YouTube, an amazing film for cinematic education!

• Seven Samurai

  Three hours long (though there is an interval half way through) does get painful but it is one of the most praised films of all time for a reason. Akira Kurosawa is likely the greatest of all time, and when you watch this film you will see his influence in pretty much every action film ever (especially the end fight scene in dune 2)
  

• sex, lies, and videotape

  Such a good cult classic. The lowest budget move to ever win the Palme D’or at Cannes, Steven Soderbergh (writer/director of Erin brokovich, the oceans eleven trilogy) debuts strongly with this fascinating movie. It’s a great script and just the perfect kind of I guess entanglement. Andie MacDowell is a fucking ICON! And is a true stunner here.
