It's a shame stop motion is dying, because it never went out of style. Making a horror movie about dolls and buttons with real dolls and buttons gives Coraline exactly the unique, quirky texture that its premise demands. (And that creepy choir music is great too!)

Unlike the *other* 2000s-era animated movie I love about a girl getting lost in a surreal supernatural world, having her parents held hostage, and winning a bet with an evil old woman to escape, Coraline's fast pace is conducive to a much tenser story that its strong protagonist and antagonist are able to carry flawlessly. Selick has taken us on a satisfyingly brief excursion into a world beyond ours, and he knows not to explain too much or let his audience overstay our welcome

Eggers turned everything up to 11: the sets, the presentation, the horniness, and especially the facial hair
