Ghoulies II

1987

After this movie opened with a priest wandering into a mechanic's garage and falling into an open barrel of acid, I knew I was in for a good time.

I did not, however, expect to get so emotionally invested in the plight of this film's circus folk main characters. Parts of this are borderline moving lmao.

Ghoulies

1985

From what I can tell from reviews on here this was a horror movie about cults that was retrofitted to be about puppet creatures after the success of Gremlins. The poster implies a more fun movie with a lot more Ghoulies.

If I were hired to rewrite this script, my first note would be that the protagonist should *not* be a lifeless mind-controlled husk for the entire film.

Demme did not have to go this hard on a light comedy

The Family Stone

Looking at the reviews, this is a surprisingly divisive movie, and I landed somewhere in the middle on it. It's as mean-spirited as I'd heard, and yet, I can totally see why it resonates with people. Despite having the look of a family rom-com, the characters in this one are legitimately nasty and flawed, and in it's best moments it captures the mood of a tense family Christmas. Still, I can't help but feel like the more traditional rom-com elements…

Nosferatu the Vampyre

Finally caught up just in time for the new one to leave theaters! This one both rocks and is kind of boring. Love the first dinner scene with Kinski's Dracula. Very scary but I also like how long Herzog holds all the master shots. Gives you a real-time experience of having to eat dinner and make small talk with this guy.

Ashamed to say my mind wondered a little throughout this. However I was fully transfixed whenever Count Orlock was onscreen. Still scary after 100 years!

Bandits

This is what the Blank Check podcast calls a "gentleman's six." Perfect as a post adult rec dodgeball Tubi movie served with fast food. Yes, you read that right, my lifestyle is really that good.

All three leads are game but Blanchett really runs away with the movie. There's a great little screwball section in the middle when she first shows up and if the rest of the movie had kept that energy up it would be better ed.

This movie is also at the very least not anti polycule, which feels unusual for a Hollywood circa 2001.

If one of the goals of my Empire 500 project was to get me out of my comfort zone, this certainly achieved that.

Into the Blue

Why don't we make the whole movie out of hot people who can't act?

Late Night with the Devil

Despite the AI stuff (which to be clear, is bad), I found this vaguely likeable. Evudently low budget, with a bunch of basically unknown actors throwing heat - I dunno. Like everyone has already said, the ending doesn't work and the movie breaks the format of the framing device way too often, but I was engaged.

Also nice to see Dastmalchian levelling up, and this shows that he can absolutely carry a genre movie on his own.

80 for Brady

Wanted to like this but even dumb nonsense like this screenplay deserves better filmmaking! A couple good jokes in here that don't even because they are shot and cut together so badly.

Sally Field adorable and committed as always.

Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman

2003

★★★ 2

Still slowly making my way through the entirety of the DC Animated universe. This one feels a little tossed off. I figured out the titular mystery in the opening 20 minutes.

Yes folks, you read that right, a grown man pushing thirty successfully outsmarted a two decade old children's animated film about Batman.
