"You can't get the clues by just beating."

In this amazing film that has Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock kicking ass and being an incredible duo on screen with their chemistry (which should be enough to convince you to watch it), we get a scene that showcases not just why action and comedy work so well together but also why lots of action films that do practical stunts are influenced by the silent comedy of Chaplin, Keaton and Lloyd.

Tsui Hark, who I was surprised to see here as just an actor as he is an important figure in Hong Kong cinema (go look at what he produced and directed), plays a ing role who makes fake IDs and fake pistols and with him we get my favourite scene in the film where he gets attacked in his apartment and slapstick ensues. The drawers turn out to be fake doors he can slide through to and escape; the cage wall is actually a sliding door mechanism; and even has a look-alike doll to fool someone. It's as though a bit from Keaton short was put into this 80s Hong Kong flick. Of course, it's with different cinematography and editing, but it has the same energy and creativity of utilising a single set to it's full capability to create laugh out loud moments. It's an incredible action set piece for the action heads and amazing slapstick comedy for the silent comedy heads.

'It's not "just" a handbag. It's Prada!'

I was honestly surprised by how much I enjoyed this one. There is good writing in how the leads get used to performing as women and even enjoy it from the slumber parties to the shopping trips. It turns into a fun gender-fluid part in the narrative especially with it ending wholesomely that they will continue to do fun stuff with their newly found girl friends. Terry Crews here is a show-stealer in how he plays a satirised version of a hyper masculine and sexualised black character in media. Every scene with him is amazing with a shoutout to him singing “A Thousand Miles,” which had me crying from laughter. The whiteface while horrifying to look at is intentional by the filmmakers to look that way and adds to the comedy with anyone they interact with.

The big problem with the film, besides the sexist and homophobic jokes, is the FBI plot, which while watching I completely forgot about as it's not interesting, even though it's the reason why they dressed as white women. So, while those scenes were happening I was looking at the timer wondering when can we go back to the good parts, but sadly the final half hour of the film is focused on wrapping up all of it, so I can't say overall enjoyed this but I wasn't having a bad time for half of the runtime either.

In the landscape of slop with more MCU and other superhero flicks or franchises like the US Godzilla films and likely more Star Wars films that lack creative control it's good to look at movies made in this same era that had a director at the helm who actually cared about artistry even if that artistry is ugly and you hate it.

This list will be kept around the MCU-era as it has broadly changed how movies are being made.

I don't know what magical force overcame me to make a Letterboxd list of every film mentioned in the Bloopercast podcast.
