Joyce Carol Oates: A Body in the Service of Mind

2021

★★★

While the talent and work ethic of Joyce Carol Oates can never be questioned, This documentary kind of left me asking...but why? An intensely private woman that does not want to be in a documentary finally agreeing due to the persistence of the film maker... it feels a bit like an invasion of her privacy. She has written too many books to do a full retrospective, and touched on too many different subjects to try to tie them all together. The documentary seems to just skim the service of many of her most popular works while also showing a mix of tv interviews and appearances she has made throughout her life. None of it is really that riveting because by her own ission she just writes everyday for hours and hours on end. While this is inspiring from a work ethic point of view, it is not exactly entertaining to watch. Maybe a cool look behind the scenes for big fans but really kind of just a surface view of a woman who wants to be left alone to write.
