The lead truly gives one of the greatest minimalist performance in all of cinema history. Her face blank yet full her experiencess. The look on her face at the end of the film in particular, so subtle, has within it every second of tragedy, loss and heartbreak the character has endured since the film started.

Gena Rowlands is amazing, while every major chatacter adult in her family is insufferable. She has bipolar or some other mood disorder yet is the only adult whie isn't the problem, and us the most sane by far. A collection of chaotic characters in her father, husband and mother in law who seem to exist to do everything wrong. Without Rowlands brilliant this movie would be unwatchable due to them.
