The Substance

And that’s why you shouldn’t do drugs.

This Substance is driven by an obsessive framing and editing style that’s impossible to look away from, and packed with claustrophobic closeups and a surprisingly fast pace for its runtime that delivered just about all the body horror you could possibly want.

Preying on the fear of aging, modern beauty standards, and medical gore galore, this film has some absolutely insane makeup/practical effects work. It takes some clear cues from both Carpenter…

Jane Schoenbrun is very quickly climbing up the list of the my favorite up-and-coming directors. This was a fantastic multi-genre showing that got under my skin and really touched me as a coming of age tale. It’s a dreamlike mediation on escapism entertainment and the prison of gender, and I was loving how heavy a topic of discussion the inherent queerness of the film was at the Q+A (weeks ago because finals are killing me rn but it was so…

I love that tater tots are Jerd Hess’ calling card. For all the commotion around chicken jockey I was expecting kind of a more exciting scene. Or at least a more iconic piece of Minecraft imagery? Is that the joke? Is everything beyond ironic now and I’m just too old? That’s how this movie makes me feel, old as hell. The ultra realistic vibes of the designs were just a little uncanny for my taste. Enjoyed all the random bullshit…

It’s a Wes Anderson movie, through and through. I thought the father-daughter relationship in this developed really well. Trying to think of something to say that doesn’t apply to every film of his gets a little harder every time, but the feeling of looking back on one’s life and legacy and the questioning of beliefs is prevalent in this. And there’s a strong set of characters at the center. Basketball scene is untouchable. Love Michael Cera’s entire vibe here too.

Two A24 bangers in one week? We ATE…

Don’t know where to start. I don’t mean to sound dramatic or anything, but this was the most cathartic movie experience for me in a long time. It’s uplifting in a deeply cosmic way and it made meaning in my life for those two short hours in the dark theater. The whole multiverse plot device allows for so many absurd tangents and ridiculous subplots that I loved. It’s chaos, but if it…
