Something has definitely changed in me……something’s definitely not the same.
Being a big fan of this musical since I was a child, a lot of leading up to this moment. I would be lying if I said I didn’t go into this with a bit of apprehension. While I still think it wasn’t a perfect film, it was a lovely time and a worthy feat at adapting this source material. Cynthia gave such a heavily emotive performance as Elphaba and Ariana was hilarious and pitch perfect as Glinda, who is one of the well-written characters in pop culture history. I was welling up with tears during the Ozdust Ballroom scene and I was fully sobbing during Defying Gravity. Jon Chu, brava!
I did wish they leaned into the innuendos and suggestiveness that made the Broadway show a bit more adult and mature, but I understand that a broader audience reach was the goal here and they did a great job at doing so. Some of the most astounding set design and world building I’ve seen in a while. A popcorn movie, but a solid and effective one that will stand the test of time.
I just know that For Good in Part Two will wreck me and ruin me as a person. Give it to me now.
