The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion

2018

★★

So much bullshit to get to the good stuff. And so much exposition. It seems like people are always talking about what we already know or shit we can easily figure out has happened. There seems to be no attempt at all to let the audience figure out the slightest thing.

Maybe because it's a "teen" movie, but even as a teen I imagine there is only so much exposition that my young mind could take.

Park Hoon-jung is a fantastic writer, and there are ideas in here that show his immense talent. But after the somewhat disappointing VIP, with this he seems to push his talent to the background to pander to the audience and give them what he "thinks" they want. Much like Romero with Diary of the Dead, all i see is a filmmaker trying to make a movie that audiences will like rather than make something from his heart. And it shows.

This is such a long, drawn out bore that the excellent parts are negated by the awful pacing, dialogue and characters.

If there are any plans for a part 2, I hope Park has either learned from his mistakes on this one, or just cancels it and makes something he actually believes in.
