Wow. I first read about this film in my issue of The Metrograph and I was immediately hooked. If you’re looking for women empowerment look no further than nuns with guns! She could shoot me with a bow and arrow… 

Its one hell of a journey, from sparse city skylines to some pretty impossible guilty-pleasure kills, it’s sheer beauty and pleasure with a strange Tarantino influence (be interested to look into if he’s watched this himself) I had so much fun watching this and will be talking to anyone I can about it until I find something that tops it.

These damn closing scenes are imprinted in my mind, the most creative artistry. I can’t get enough.

The definition of abyss; Absolutely nobody prepared me for this!

Just unreal. The ion felt when watching this is hard to explain. A firm divider, with me sitting devotedly on the best film of Guadagnino, he really provokes in this. 

A burden of eroticism and love, hauntingly melancholic and depressingly relatable. Everyone involved in this production completely worked their guts off. It’s painstakingly beautiful, obsessive, sensual and wrapped in the most luxurious score. Definitely one of my favourites of 2024.

Okay Jim Jarmusch, you’ve piqued my interest. This was very special.

“Nighttime will do that to ya.” 

Ryan Coogler, creator of one of my favourite films of all time, Fruitvale Station, is back with a concrete cinematic masterpiece. A genre-blending film, Coogler has created this mix of horror and history perfectly, never knowing what you’ll chew on next. 

I anticipated I’d eat this up due to its influence drawn from a revamp (pardon the pun) of From Dusk till Dawn, which is another firm favourite of mine. The portrayal of vampires and historical freedom and culture is wildly overachieving, but is of course pulled off with total success.

Honestly, a visual feast with the use of those 1.43:1 shots encapsulating you in a feeling you’re not even fully aware of yet. The score, the production, the acting, and the jarring juxtaposition from the exploration of generational music adds layers of metaphors to this. The direction being a clear revival of blockbuster cinema!

An indispensable post-credit scene that transcended directly into my bones and left me feeling a way that I haven’t felt since watching the extended cut of Hateful Eight back in 2015.

This was a forceful reintroduction to cinema, as I haven’t had too much time for it recently, but this gets me excited for what else is to come, though it has to be said the bar for 2025 is set high!!

“I could bean you for that!”

Built on a facade and not too dissimilar to her latest Babygirl, a woman trapped in a monotonous, conservative family but wanting excitement.

I can see what this was trying to achieve, but it fell short. It gave me a sense of Don’t Worry Darling but less punchy. A wise man once said Nicole Kidman has never been bad in a film, but she’s been in a bad film…

It’s stunning; the dialogue was well done, but the storyline itself slaps you in the face prematurely. It’s obvious what the film is alluding to, but it never ramped back up. It’s quite a shame because this could have been executed beautifully. 

There were eerie similarities with this and my life too! She’s called Mrs V; I’m a trainee Optometrist, the odd husband/wife dynamic; it was a bit feverish. I wouldn’t discount it completely, but given how much I enjoyed the seamlessly paced plot of Fresh, in comparison this was slightly disappointing.

“Ah fuck, he got me in the hammy!” 

Proving that Millie Bobby Brown is this generation’s Chloë Grace Mortez (in other words a one hit wonder) and who’d have thought Woody Harrelson would voice a peanut. 

It was doing a hell of a lot but executing very little, then again who’s surprised with Netflix for churning out a star-studded inept plot.

I will live and die on the hill of this being pure genius. The use of cameras and lighting in this drives me wild, a genuinely perfect visual experience.

I mean, it’s Sean fucking Baker.

“Thick as a brick, you keeping your ass here. Light as a feather; you’re free.”

I watched Sing Sing, and I cried-cried. 

I knew this would be an emotional ride, but I was not expecting it to be so all-encoming. Firstly, it’s beautiful. Possibly one of the most creatively shot films I’ve watched in a while, Kwedar says a lot in one shot without saying anything verbally. The scene with the solitary chair had me broken. High in both empathy and stakes, I wish I hadn’t slept on this when it was in the cinema.

Colman Domingo has been one to watch for ages; he’s been landing minor roles for a long time and is incredibly deserving of these nominations. All the acting in this was truly incredible. 

It’s a slow burn, but I don’t mind that; it gives you time to really get to grips with the contrast of humanity these people have endured. Just as I thought I’d found my favourite film of the year, I’m left rethinking, and I now have another Oscars favourite to root for.

Rehabilitation through the Arts. This was so, so powerful.

“Sit down on your ass! Or what’s left of it after four years in the Navy”

Such a beautifully shot story. If he knows one thing, it’s how to really create that gripping, raw sexual tension.

The acting in this is as to be expected, spot on. Their chemistry is felt in every frame, and what beautiful frames they are. An unmistakable Guadagnino aesthetic wrapped in vibrant 50s Mexico culture, at times this reminded me of Pedro Almodóvar’s Shrinking Man.

The whole way throughout this, I just wanted to drink tequila and dance. With themes surrounding acceptance and addiction in the simplest form, an attraction. A connection.

A master of his craft, Guadagnino does not mess around. No creation of film is for people pleasing but to push boundaries, to provoke and invoke. It isn’t one to sit inside your comfort zone, but within the first 45 minutes, this has easily made it to my favourite watch of 2025. 

I have to give Daniel Craig his dues; for a male of his generation, I wouldn’t have pegged him for this role (pardon the pun). He took on a role of vulnerability; he performs this to the best of his ability and with no known experience of homosexuality yet such visceral intimacy. 

Trent Reznor of course seals the deal and my only real complaint is how it’s had no nominations!?

“Ignoring the proverbial slaughterhouse to enjoy the steak”

This hit harder than I’d initially expected; Culkin's performance really crept up on me; his vulnerability and outlook on how others see the world is not only valid but carries considerable weight. It’s intentionally uncomfortable but still has moments of humour.

I loved the soviet architecture and vacant landscapes, it really echoes the tone of the film. My favourite scene being the rooftop scene where they’re drenched in the neon red lighting during a pretty pivotal moment in the dialogue. The cinematography is stunning. 

The ending scene is especially sensitive as we get a close-up on Benji surrounded by his people living their lives, still looking as lost as he was at the beginning, insinuating that he may not have found what he set out to and has still not taken his own path. I don’t think we’re meant to find a likeability with Benji, but there’s definitely a sense of familiarity.

This made me both laugh and cry. A surprisingly poignant character study that I didn’t think I’d enjoy as much as I did. It was moving, sharp, and is incredibly deserving of its awards.
