The Dropout

2022

★★★★ Liked

The Dropout doesn’t dramatically defy the docudrama miniseries formula by any means, but it doesn’t really have to thanks to still reliably riveting writing throughout and a sensational leading turn from Amanda Seyfried, who makes the task of characterizing and consolidating Elizabeth Holmes’ endless eccentricities and contradictions in one performance look like child’s play. It’s almost definitely the best - and most defining - work of her career so far, and I’d be utterly shocked if a plethora of accolades didn’t follow - and I’m even more curious now how Adam McKay and Jennifer Lawrence intend to follow up this adaptation of this story with their own film in the near future, given how brilliantly this (and Seyfried especially) covered all the bases.

Hulu is simply killing it when it comes to miniseries these days, and The Dropout is easily one of the best of the bunch. If you wanna be caught up on Emmy contenders by the fall, don’t miss it.
