The Whale struggles to adapt from the stage to the screen, oftentimes coming across as artificial instead of authentic, and Darren Aronofsky was so clearly not the right choice to direct this subject matter, lacking the sensitivity and subtlety it demands.
Brendan Fraser’s performance remains powerful - at points - and Sadie Sink stuns in a sharp ing turn, but the commanding Hong Chau was by far and away my MVP, as the cast member who most transcended the film’s…
Few films have left me as creatively inspired and invigorated as Causeway this year, and I can’t fully put my finger on why that is.
I think it might be the fact that I’ve simply fallen head-over-heels in love with Lila Neugebauer’s direction after watching her work here and in Maid and The Sex Lives of College Girls (I need her to take over the industry NOW), but there’s also something about this story specifically that keeps me coming back,…
They don’t make ‘em like this anymore.
Causeway daringly refuses to overdramatize its depiction of trauma, and Jennifer Lawrence and Bryan Tyree Henry do the same, delivering fully realized and deeply felt performances - and the film is all the better for it. It’s small-scale and patiently paced, but it’s not setting out to change the world - and it’s still supremely stirring nonetheless. Special shoutout to the crisp cinematography and subtle score too, as both work in tandem to…
The Eternal Daughter - A.K.A. The Souvenir Part III - is a sumptuously shot and delicately directed ghost story of sorts from Joanna Hogg, who demonstrates a masterful grasp on mood throughout (even effectively handling the film’s sardonic humor) as Tilda Swinton stuns and stirs the soul in dual roles. A thrilling little genre-y treat that didn’t go where I expected it to.
Jeremy Pope is phenomenally moving in The Inspection, a harrowing look into the life of a gay Marine recruit and the conflict - and camaraderie - he experiences throughout his time in the Army. Bokeem Woodbine also shines as a wicked superior, and Gabrielle Union steals her scenes. Perhaps a bit too short/slight to mine this material for all it’s dramatic depth, but mightily effective nevertheless.
Had to rewatch my favorite “95-minute ment for cleavage” this afternoon 🫶🏻
Bodies Bodies Bodies fucks.
Read my full review over on Next Best Picture (in which I refrained from turning the entire piece into a tribute to the comedic talents of Rachel Sennott).
Bodies Bodies Bodies is SO FUCKING FUN. A brutal blast from start-to-finish with a razor sharp script that is equal parts horrifying and hilarious, featuring probably the only accurate depiction of Gen Z in entertainment today. Lee Pace is a perfect himbo. Rachel Sennott, a RIOT.
Film Twitter, this one was made for you.
Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is a salve for the soul. Endlessly endearing, overwhelmingly optimistic, and so mightily moving. A simple yet supremely sweet script is elevated by Jenny Slate’s warm and witty voice work. That shell is gonna be the star of the summer.
