both the best movie ever made and also somehow only the second best mission: impossible movie

It’s impossible for me to rate this “seriously” - I discovered this book over the pandemic, tore through it in a matter of days, and followed every part of the show’s production from start-to-finish in anticipation. I’ve been waiting for it forever, and watching something you care about so deeply in one medium come alive in another is simply one of the most exciting experiences ever. And while there’s no “perfect” adaptation (and I understand being upset with some of…
I saw the critiques a bit more on a second viewing - and I did feel like it took a bit longer to really “get going” - but what can I say? This thing just really works for me, and it wins me over every time. Maybe it’s because I Love Lucy was such a big part of my life growing up, or maybe it’s because I’m just such a sucker for stories that take us “behind-the-scenes” of showbiz. It’s not perfect - and far from Sorkin’s best - but it’s easily a more “enjoyable” watch than his past directorial effort (even if I feel like Molly’s Game and The Trial of the Chicago 7 are “fuller” films). And though it tries to tackle a bit too many topics in its two-hour runtime, when it lets an…
No one in this movie acts like a real person! The whole thing is an alien’s idea of what human beings are like! And yet, it’s sort of similar to a car crash in that it’s just SO gloriously grotesque that you… can’t look away?
MVP: Selena Gomez?
Totally forgot to log this yesterday, but I had a lot of fun! The songs are largely solid, if sometimes repetitive (although the opening number “Don’t Even Know It” is a BANGER), and it definitely runs a bit long, but the charming cast elevates the film immensely, with Harwood, Lancashire, and Patel serving as the standouts. It’s just so full of life and love and some stellar LGBTQ+ representation (especially thanks to new song “This Was Me,” which reverentially recreates queer resilience in the 80s amidst the AIDS epidemic). What a year for musicals this is 🥳
