Lol, absolutely not.

Idina Menzel and Billy Porter innocent. Camila Cabello and James Corden need to be tried for crimes against humanity.

Look, Cinderella is my favorite Disney princess, and the story is one I hold near and dear to my heart for many reasons, so I was always gonna be apprehensive of any adaptation following Kenneth Branagh’s masterful reinvigoration of the classic tale in 2015. As others before me have pointed out, this does everything wrong that that film…

A Rainy Day in New York

2019

★½ 1

No one in this movie acts like a real person! The whole thing is an alien’s idea of what human beings are like! And yet, it’s sort of similar to a car crash in that it’s just SO gloriously grotesque that you… can’t look away?

I’m just so TIRED (first because of this boring and bland biopic and second because Hollywood continues to stick Rosamund Pike in the most staid and stuffy starring roles possible!!!)

Annette

★★½ Watched

An absolute acid trip that doesn’t really pay off in any affecting way but is absolutely worth watching for the sheer audacity of it all. If I ever voluntarily see this again, I certainly won’t be sober.

Driver is very good and very hot but you knew that already. Annette is the cursed twin of the American Sniper baby.

The Lie

The story is stretched thin, but it’s saved by strong performances from Enos and Sarsgaard. Not awful, but nothing exemplary either.

Will forever be humorous that this was a TIFF Gala premiere alongside the likes of A Star Is Born, Widows, and First Man, though.

The Electrical Life of Louis Wain

★★★ Liked Rewatched

The Electrical Life of Louis Wain follows a familiar formula, but director Will Sharpe’s signature style – and Benedict Cumberbatch’s playful performance – set it apart from the pack.

TIFF 2021 - Film #12

The Electrical Life of Louis Wain is a bit of a basic biopic overall, and it takes a while to get going, but Sharpe’s striking style elevates the story considerably. And who couldn’t love all those adorable cats? Cumberbatch is convincingly quirky, though Foy steals the show.

A relic of the 90s that has absolutely nothing on its mind aside from showcasing skillfully staged action spectacle, but sometimes... that’s all you need! The story is as stereotypical, surface-level, and straightforward as possible, and there are virtually no surprises to speak of, but god dammit, at the end of this wretched week I just wanted to turn my brain off and watch things blow up, and this fit the bill 😌

Nowhere near my favorite work from Eddie Murphy, but he’s still as charming as ever, even when the humor is hit-or-miss. Kinda hoping I enjoy the sequel more?

Alex Wheatle

★★★ Watched

Led spectacularly by a stellar Sheyi Cole but unfortunately undone by an unfocused narrative, Alex Wheatle is sadly the weakest Small Axe episode yet, though McQueen’s magnetic ion is still as present as ever, which prevents this work from being written off entirely.
