The original Borat feels more “timeless” - as a lot of the commentary here is meant to speak to this specific cultural moment and therefore could have more of an “expiration date” - and some of the more structured bits in the beginning feel somewhat “forced,” but that doesn’t change the fact that Baron Cohen’s social critiques…

The scene where Ali’s Juan unpacks the meaning of the word “faggot” to Chiron is one of the most well-written, well-acted, and well-directed scenes of the past decade - hell, maybe even the past century. I had such a visceral reaction to it on my first watch, and the impact still remains, almost three years later. Definitely my favorite Best Picture winner in recent memory, by FAR.

I saw the critiques a bit more on a second viewing - and I did feel like it took a bit longer to really “get going” - but what can I say? This thing just really works for me, and it wins me over every time. Maybe it’s because I Love Lucy was such a big part of my life growing up, or maybe it’s because I’m just such a sucker for stories that take us “behind-the-scenes” of showbiz. Whatever the case, I genuinely enjoy this one, and I think Kidman and Bardem absolutely knock it out of the PARK.
I have no problem itting when I was wrong for pre-judging a film, and boy, was I wrong about Being the Ricardos. It’s not perfect - and far from Sorkin’s best - but it’s easily a more “enjoyable” watch than his past directorial effort (even if I feel like Molly’s Game and The Trial of the Chicago 7 are “fuller” films).
