This is Ennis & Jack’s story through and through, and I certainly think a lot about Ledger & Gyllenhaal’s awards snubs every day, but I believe that Michelle Williams is *criminally* overlooked when we discuss this movie. I will never forget her expression when she catches Ennis & Jack kissing for the first time; the subtle mix of shock and pain that so effortlessly washes over her face is heartbreaking.

With what could’ve been a mere stereotypical “homophobic Southern wife” stereotype, Williams really elevates…

The scene where Ali’s Juan unpacks the meaning of the word “faggot” to Chiron is one of the most well-written, well-acted, and well-directed scenes of the past decade - hell, maybe even the past century. I had such a visceral reaction to it on my first watch, and the impact still remains, almost three years later. Definitely my favorite Best Picture winner in recent memory, by FAR.

Barry Jenkins, never stop making movies.

Women Talking

2022

Women Talking is so many things, all at the same time, and all of them absolutely stunning. An empathetic epic on an intimate scale. A radical act of female reinvention. And an emotionally enlightening examination of our eternal struggle to (safely) secure our space in the world. Sarah Polley’s delicate direction and sensitive screenplay pair like poetry, while the entire ensemble is so uniformly exceptional that I struggle to single out a favorite performance at the moment - though Claire…

Alright, Salieri has had his time in the spotlight, so here’s MY confession.

As I continue on my “Best Picture winner binge,” I remain increasingly skeptical of all these “epics” with 3+ hour runtimes. This isn’t to say I have anything against “long movies” by any means - Titanic was a childhood staple and my family & I almost wore out our VHS with how often we rewatched that masterwork - but for every Titanic, there’s some empty, elongated, and pretentious…

The Exorcist

I totally understand how some of the initial “shock” of The Exorcist has worn off in the past 46 years for some viewers, but even in spite of its age, the titular climatic exorcism remains one of the most viscerally thrilling and primally horrifying setpieces in any horror film and any film period.

Remarkable filmmaking from top-to-bottom and an immediate classic for good reason.

Emma Thompson bring the only person to have won Academy Awards for both acting and screenwriting because of her wondrous work here... that’s history luv x

(Also there will never be another man as gloriously gorgeous as 90s Hugh Grant and that’s a FACT)

Truly some of the best set-up and payoff I’ve ever seen. That shot never fails to absolutely demolish my tear ducts.

(P.S. Taika EARNED that Adapted Screenplay Oscar and I will not hear otherwise. Cheers!)

All About Eve

“Nice speech, Eve. But I wouldn’t worry too much about your heart. You can always put that award where your heart ought to be.”

Decided to rewatch this after its recent Criterion announcement. To no surprise, it remains the definitive cinematic portrait of social climbers in the intoxicating world of stardom. Masterclass in acting, directing, and most of all, that writing.

And as for the final shot? POETIC! CINEMA!
