… Woof.
Eternals is a whooooole lotta movie… TOO much movie. Too many heroes, too much exposition, and too little time to do this cast and these characters justice (even at 3 hours!). The actors are largely innocent, but Chloé Zhao’s signature style is almost stamped out completely, and that’s the most damning and disappointing development of all. Aside from a few select shots, it's a visually unimaginative blur.
I am ittedly a Marvel fan for the most part, and I…
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has irable intentions - and it’s not without bits of brilliance here or there - but, ultimately, its conclusion is an unfulfilling end note to an immensely uneven series overall.
The ensemble is largely excellent - Mackie and Stan are in top form, Brühl is a devilish delight in his brief return, and Russell & Kellyman definitely do the best with what they’re given... but those latter two are also the source of the series’…
Original review here!
Sadly, I still feel that the film is wholly unnecessary, and my fundamental issues with the ending remain.
I think the Toy Story franchise is much better off without this installment, and I do believe that it’s overstuffed and lacks the finesse of the previous films’ writing. It’s fine enough I guess as disposable family entertainment, but we’ve come to expect SO much more. Still disappointed I don’t see what everyone else sees in this one, but c’est la vie! 🤷🏼♂️
I’ve tried to write and rewrite this review about a dozen times, and I think I’ve finally settled on the right words.
In a way, I left Toy Story 4 with the same feeling of disappointment that accompanied me as I left Incredibles 2 this same time last year.
Both films are immediate sequels to practically flawless predecessors in my eyes, and both films were accompanied with exclamatory pre-release raves that catapulted my expectations into the stratosphere. As someone whose…
😬
Despite a strong start and a cool concept, Strange World fumbles the bag after its first act and never digs deeper into its characters or themes beyond the surface level. The dialogue is dry, the plot is plain, and the overall journey is kinda joyless. Nice to look at though, I guess? (And I hate that such authentic LGBTQ+ representation isn’t in a better film.)
Yeah, this one didn’t hold up at all, unfortunately. In trying so hard to be some epic statement on existence, it fails to simply tell a good story, and it simultaneously loses sight of its characters. I respect Pixar for tackling such weighty subject matter, but the execution can’t quite match their ambitions.
Some truly captivating cinematography aside, Disney’s new Black Beauty is sadly still a pretty sluggish and uninvolving story overall. Mackenzie Foy is a lovely lead, and Kate Winslet’s narration is nice enough, but it ultimately doesn’t add anything new to the oft-told tale.
I just woke up from an unexpected and unplanned nap that began during this film’s third act, so that should tell you everything you need to know.
Better than Dumbo, the last entry in the “Danny DeVito stars in a Disney movie centered around a circus” Cinematic Universe... but just barely.
Sincerely shocked that this was ever intended for theatrical release even in spite of the ~Tambor of it all~ simply because it’s directed and written exactly like a Disney Channel Original Movie lol ?
