being friends with one of your favorite filmmakers fucking rocks because you get to be one of the first people to see their latest work before everyone else so i’m always honored when alice lets me take a look at what she’s been building because everything she touches is as beautiful and brilliant as her - and the serpent’s skin is no exception. spooky and sapphic as hell with a badass witchy trans girl as the lead… what more do you want from the movies. keep this one (and miss alice maio mackay) on your radar :)

propulsively paced, exceptionally edited, and well-acted across-the-board (john magaro mvp, per usual), but the frustratingly “apolitical” script lacks crucial context and the film’s questionable timing is even more so with that in mind

when we say “movies are magic,” this is what we mean. what this is able to accomplish emotionally and thematically with no dialogue and a cast of entirely non-anthropomorphized animals is nothing short of a miracle of the medium. my cat loved it as much as me :)

crazy year for social satires centered around characters who undergo experimental treatments in an attempt to become a better version of themselves only to realize it’s not everything they expected and subsequently spiral out of control

what a fucking gut punch of a film. despite not knowing much about the military dictatorship in brazil ahead of time - if anything - i still immediately fell head over heels for this family and found myself instantly immersed in their tenderly depicted dynamic, so comionately captured in that first (nearly) tension-free half hour. and it’s these first 30 minutes of unadulterated joy and frivolity that make the rest of the movie as mightily emotionally affecting as it ultimately…

took me some time to settle into the style, but as soon as i did, i was engrossed until the end. the filmmaking has this ineffable hypnotic quality that commands you to live alongside the characters instead of simply ively watching the story unfold, and it’s impossible to shake even after the credits roll. jomo fray’s consuming cinematography is the true star of the show though, which not only places us right in the thick of the plot but also…

i’ve said it once and i’ll say it again: nobody is making movies like alice maio mackay right now, and this might be her best yet.

i’m always looking for more holiday horror, so if you give me that and a trans final girl i’m basically already sold, but when you throw in a suspenseful small town murder mystery, some truly gnarly gore, and sly queer social commentary to top it all off, i couldn’t ask for more.

i absolutely adoooooore alice maio mackay as both a filmmaker and a friend and i’m so glad she’s making movies right now because nobody - and i mean nobody - has a voice like hers.

i had the pleasure of watching t blockers almost a year ago and was blown away by her beautifully vicious vision and now that the official trailer is out i can’t recommend that you watch it (and the movie as well obviously) enough. trans women are the future of film babyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
